It sounds like the burnishing operation was not completed prior to installing the shifter. When the burnishing operation is completed following the install directions, the pin should easilly glide through the bushing assembly with a slight resistance.
I would suggest taking the shifter out of the car and re do the burnishng operation. Also when doing the install, don't force the pin through the trans fork / shifter end,. this may gouge the bushings. It's a tight fit, but when aligned properly the pin will go through as it did when you tested after burnishing.

I could offer an install service for the Bushing kit, send me your shifter and I will press in the knew bushings and burnish to your shifter pin. If anyone is interrested let me know.

Also,.. If you have stripped screws for your shifter base, I have a quality, S.S. replacement screws available. Maybe I should include these in the replacement Bushing Kits from now on.

Bushings installed

I finally got around to installing the bushings following the instructions and the shifter is tight "better than new". Burnishing with the pin only took about an hour. I took my time and let them cool from the friction to reduce expansion to get a good fit from the pin. Not to bash Hurst I have purchased and installed their shifters in other vehicles with no issues but the nylon bushings I removed were obviously worn and caused the slop. I would still recommend Hurst but if you buy one get the replacement bushings fromm NH-SS and follow the instructions and you won't be dissapointed.

Ok problem I'm having... I got everything in there, but the pin will not go all the way through to the other side. Following NH-SS' recommendations I rocked the transmission fork while pushing the pin, still won't go through. I've also tried sliding the pin in from the other side. Its doing the same thing! With the shifter out of the car the pin slides all the way through nicely.

Success!!! Got it in tonight. Took the shifter out, took out one of the bushings, rotated it 180 degrees. Pin would not go through the bushings easy so did some quick light burnishing until the pin went through like butter. Put the shifter back in the car, rocked the fork while sliding the pin in and whaa laaa! The tougest part after that was getting the freakking hex bolts in and the boot back on! This job was hard to do if you're on your back with the car only inches above you and you have big hands like me!

Took Lucy out for a little test drive too. Shifter feels pretty good, a little poppy when shifting into the next gear and reverse was tough the first time. Now I've got to update my signature!

I assume this fix does not apply to the factory Hurst shifter?
