Thumbs down New York Reconsiders Taxing “Gas Guzzlers”

http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=62865

In another misguided attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, legislation (A.B. 1318) has been reintroduced in the New York State Assembly to establish a progressive purchase surcharge for some new motor vehicles based on state calculations of carbon emissions. Depending on the vehicle purchased, this surcharge could require owners to pay up to $2,500 more for the vehicle. Funds collected under the program would be used in part to fund discounts for hybrids and electric cars. If this effort is successful, the effects on your ability to purchase the vehicle of your choice, not to mention vehicle safety, will be dramatic.

We Urge You to Contact the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee Members (List Below) Immediately To Request Their Opposition to A.B. 1318
  • A.B 1318 will limit consumer choice in purchasing vehicles by making popular performance and luxury cars, as well as SUVs, light trucks and minivans, substantially more expensive to own.
  • A.B. 1318 will potentially lead to more deaths on New York’s highways as higher taxes on larger, safer vehicles forces consumers into smaller cars with higher accident fatality rates.
  • A.B. 1318 will not conserve energy. Greenhouse gas emissions depends on a host of other factors such as total miles traveled.
  • A.B. 1318 will do little to improve air quality. Air quality has more to do with overall basic vehicle maintenance than it does with owning and operating any particular class of vehicle.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the New York Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to A.B. 1318.
Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.

I am trying to deliver some equipment to a customer in New York...they have a TAX on delivery trucks now - a $300 "City Fee". How anyone lives in New York is beyond me.

New York City is all sorts of f'd up....the rest isn't awful...a lot like some of our southern states actually...very country in this region....but since we're still part of the state...we get to deal with what the airheads in NYC and Albany come up with.

If they keep banging the "average" midle class family and make it any harder to keep your head above water, they will have to come up with something to help fix the issues that occur with the mass exodus from this ridiculously overpriced region of the USA.

I should have been clearer...NYC is what I disdain. I grew up in West Chester, PA and am a Penn State grad...up state NY and the areas out of the city are beautiful. I have been in those areas a lot, and love it...but NYC is an aquired taste.

Let them pass it. The more people that move out of these dysfunctional states, the quicker they will collapse.

I just had to renew my Silverado registration $93.50 for two years and then $20 more for a use tax. What is a use tax? A tax on what is a tax in the first place! I love NY.

Thank you! We appreciate your activism!

Unfortunately with the economic state we're in, states are looking at us, the enthusiast, to balance budget sheets. We simply cannot allow that to happen. That's why we're here fighting for the hobby. We need passionate enthusiasts to stand-up and oppose these measures. SAN staff can't do it alone. We need as many people on our side of the ball as possible, so please join and urge your family, friends, and fellow enthusiasts to sign-up at www.SEMASAN.com. Why not? It's free!

I'm not willing to stand by and let that happen.

I will. I'll bet their logic is to make "good cars" more economically appealing than "bad" cars...and attract people to the state because of it....big problem..."good cars" aren't appealing right now....flawed logic...

CA is finally a little sane and has accepted the single, federal standard on this stuff....NY has no business meddling...
