One thing to remember is that GM spent hundreds of millions of dollars just building the plant in Oshawa to build these cars. Not only this, but I am sure they spent over $100 million to develop, engineer, test and build just this single model. So with that in mind - I am sure that any profit that is seen by GM is factored out based on forward facing sales figures. Initially and for long to come I am sure that the actual realized profit is $0.00 per car.

The point is, we sell corvettes and make $300 (that's three hundred boys n girls...) because

1. That's what the big dealers do
2. We have goals we need to meet each month for new cars.

If you don't make goals, especially in these times, who knows, you may show up on the "no longer with GM" list.

Isnt the platform based on the G8? I havent researched this but have heard that. That would mean R&D for the most part has long paid for itself.

I'm certainly not in it for the money....My I.T. job paid 3X as much - but it went to India...

But it IS stress free, and I enjoy it....and I love the vette and camaro - so I am living a SECOND childhood. I love the reaction of people picking up their Camaro's, and making friends in MANY of the states in the USA!

Yea, I know, I'm not normal!!!

This would only help to reduce the costs but each new vehicle that is developed has a huge amount of overhead costs that are only recovered over the life cycle of that body style.

And no offence to the auto dealers here..Everyone is just trying to make a living...Ive been on the other side of the table a couple of times and had my @ss handed to me when purchasing a vehicle so im a little jaded. I realize not all dealers are bad...But a majority do business...how should I put it...aggressively.

Stress-free?!?! STRESS-FREE?!?! Are you kidding me? This job is anything but stress free.

I also LOVE people's reaction to their new cars, especially the Camaro.

But it sure as heck isn't stress free. I need to move to the WEST side of the lake I guess!

Admittedly it was a lot less stressful when the hubby had a job. Now that I am the main source of income, that has really changed things. For me at least.

My understanding is dealerships pricing on cars is based on volume. The more they buy the cheaper the price is per car. The more cars they sell the more profit they make per car because sale price stays the same.

Another way to look at it is this. lets say the cars sticker price is 34,000 and they purchased it for $32,000. if that car sits on the lot for six months and the next year cars start coming and they reduce the price by 4K to clear it. Do you think a delaership is going to sell a car for $2,000 less than what they paid ?.. makes no sense. It makes more sense they would reduce the price to clear the car so they still make 20 or 30% on it to cover costs.

Of course no one is going to tell you what they make per car then you would be asking for lower prices.

If they made $2000 per sale to make 2 million a year in vehicle sales they would have to move 1000 cars in a year. Thats 19 vehicles a week every week of the year.

It would be interesting to hear the truth but unless someone in the know steps forward we wont.
