Mystery fluid
Hey guys, perhaps someone can help me figure out what type of fluid is leaking near my rear differential and drive shaft end. The 'mystery fluid' is a black oil like substance all over my floor pan and rear differential. The fluid is not leaking out of my 10 bolt. The black oil like fluid has the consistancy of motor oil as far as viscosity is concerned. Car - 1996 Z28 A4 ANy help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You're sure it's not coming out of the rear end? It sounds like a rear end seal has gone bad or a faulty vent cap if it has one.

I'd be willing to bet it's the rear end seal like aston said. my Z28 had the same issue. have you had a rear tq arm install recently? it could be the wrong pinion angle setup.

I have not had a rear torque arm installed lately. I'm thinking that it might be a rear pinion seal on the end of the driveshaft. Thanks for the help though, guys. My car just recently hit 116,000 miles.
To date: 1 new opti spark (2 yrs ago), 1 water pump gasket (2 yrs ago), 2 rebuilt tranny's (1 from driving it hard, 1 from the Hayden tranny cooler being hooked up wrong - oops), 1 window motor (2 weeks ago), 1 regulator (2 weeks ago), 1 window (2 weeks ago), 1 starter (2 weeks ago), 1 fuel pump (2 weeks ago) |

Sounds like you might want to check the pinion bearing(s) too. If it's bad a new seal would probably wear out quick.

Since you have an auto trans, it could also be transmission fluid. Some of them blow trans fluid out the vent and it gets on the torque arm, follows it the the rear end and drips off in front of the differential. If its thin and reddish, its trans fluid.Thick and brownish, its gear lube.Gear lube also has a strong smell.
