stroker question?
Up to how many inches can you stroke without needing machine work? If that is even possible I recently found out my passenger side pistons melted and I'm going to have to replace so I want to know what can I do to make my car stronger without machine work and actually get some added HP out of it if possible.

Well if your piston is fried I'm guessing machine work is a must. Get a 4" crank and stroke it to a 400+ci. Even better sleeve it and go 427+.

I always see 4.000 is the furthest you want to go.

4.00 on a stock block with forced induction. I think there are a couple people out there running 4.100 strokes but naturally aspirated.
On the stock cylinder, the pistons will go too far down in the block and the bottom of the piston gets exposed some if your stroke is longer than 4.00. Aftermarket companies like ERL, RED, and some others will install longer, thicker sleeves and you can run longer strokes/larger bores if you desire. |

I think I might be getting a 418ci rotating assembly and call it a day but the shop I'm taking it to quoted me 1600 labor + 550 machine work!.

If you are looking for reliability, don't go past a 4" stroke.
stroke to either 416ci (4" stroke x 4.07" bore) or 418ci (4" stroke x 4.08" bore) if you want 427ci+, you'll want to sleeve the block. |

You blew up your engine but want to avoid any machine work? I suggest a Huffy or Schwinn.
Do it right the first time and clean up the cylinders and let the rings seat properly. |

I was just looking to see if it was possible if it isn't then I might go all in with the 418.

To answer your question, usually if the pistons are melted at the very least you will need the block honed, but don't be surprised if the machine shop will want to do an align hone and cut the deck as well. Now, if you get your new engine together without diagnosing why the pistons melted in the first place, you will find yourself in this position again very soon. |

Zeke says it was a tuning problem but the guy that tuned my car wrote this to me when I confronted him about it "Yes it was fine. The spark plugs are dark.if it was lean they would be white and the other side would be messed up also" he found 3 head bolts loose from the intake side and is blaming it on that, if that's even possible I'm no expert by a long shot so I'm just trying to get my options sorted out before I throw this much cash at a new 418 build. At the end of the day if it does come down to it at least I would have a "bulletproof" rotating assembly from either tsp cal speed erl or whoever can offer the best deal.

With what the shop is quoting you in labor and machine work + the cost of the stroker kit you can probably just buy a stroker shortblock.
I wouldn't trust that tuner to build new motor. If I remember correctly you weren't happy with the tune either. Either way you're looking at serious $,$$$. You could always go with a rebuilt stock shortblock to hold you over and get it back on the road. |

Melted pistons man can you believe that? I'm going to go with a 418ci build and get myself HP tuner software and give matt sorian a call down at fsp for a quality tune and let him fine tune it.
