Everything is pretty easy. Make sure you have an oil drain pan that can hande 8 quarts or you will have a mess. Also, the filter is a little hard to loosen by hand. I recommend a oil filter socket that you can turn with a ratchet wrench. The oval ones that are universal are a pita on our filters.

Thanks, Wild Bill, that's just what I wanted to hear. So, I guess not much different than my old Gen3 5.0 H.O.

I have plastic ramps. They work great for lifting the front end. Bottom lip of front facia drags slightly. If front end is lowered use boards in front of ramps for clearance. Other than that its pretty easy.

Thanks, does GM make one? Which one do you have and where'd you get it?

As mentioned, the oval filter wrenches can be difficult. But there is a smaller size oval filter wrench which actually works ok.

I went with a Dimple magnet plug. It’s a bit longer, reported to have the strongest magnet, and more closely resembles the stock plug in length. However, I think they all are better than the stock.

Prior post of a step by step for the V8:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53422

The drain plug and oil filter are located somewhat close to each other under the car on a V8. It's my understanding that the V6 is different.

If you've warmed up the car, with 8 quarts the oil will initially shoot out of the vehicle a good distance so plan to place your collection pan a distance away from the plug initially.

If you torque the oil plug it takes 18 lbs. I've always cranked it on by socket or wrench good and tight.

I sent my "Gold Plug" magnetic oil plug back for a $18.00 refund. Although it was magnetic I don't like the fact that it uses an aluminum thin washer and the plug head wasn't nearly as big as the OEM which BTW has a nice rubber insert washer built in the plug. Our oil is full synthetic and has a good tendancy to leak or seep with a poor seal. I'm sticking with the OEM oil plug. Even though I could have used some permatex thread sealer I just don't trust that thin washer.

Check the tightness on your filter after replacing, before you lower the car. Mine spun loose after my first change (Napa 7060, hand tightened), just enough to leave about 6 oz. on the floor of my garage about 400 miles after the change was done. Lucky it didn't spin off any more while I was on the road!

Gold plug/oil filter

My 2 cents; the thin washer on the gold plug is meant to be replaced each time as it crushes went torched. As for the loose filter, 2 birds, one stone; if you get the K&N filter it has a nut 1" on the bottom to loosen and a small hole to safety wire it so it can't back out. Just say'n....

I helped my friend do a oil change on his 2011 Camaro SS
and he uses Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic motor oil with Mobil 1
oil filters and we didn't have any problems getting the oil filter on or off.
Just make sure you get the oil filter on tight enough and you
will be fine.
