What I DO know: I was witness to a 12 hour test with Automatic...... I think I can safely say that I've never led this community in the wrong direction: you are perfectly safe in purchasing an automatic trans.....

For you auto' guys (and maybe me too) - I ALWAYS install tranny coolers on anything truck or mine or performance-oriented. I had TWO 24K-pound B&M coolers on my '02, and that was before I added the loser converter.
While we know ZL1 has a tranny cooler, and we know that GM takes the durability considerably seriously, I would definately look into adding an additional cooler into the circuit. While I don't know that I believe GM will leave it running too hot, I do know that the tranny fluid also cools the diff' fluid. What I remember was, that at least for 4L60s (and I'm sure that extends to 6L80s and 6L90s) that running around with fluid temps at and above 200* was not a good idea because it was at the threshold of the limits of the tranny fluid. While it's my understanding the current tranny fluid blends are at least partially synthetic, and therefore more tollerant to higher temperatures - I still feel for less than $100, another effective cooler is just added protection. Now - I recognize you still have to have heat in the fluid, however, heat is the primary killer of autos', and if you're worried about 24-hour endurance testing, I bet at least one additional cooler is something that wouldn't hurt. It's almost never bad to be safe. I still believe that GM's got the cooling correct on ZL1, but with something like this, I like to add a little more safety factor JMVHO

I had a thyroid problem once and HEATED seats too. So, the cooler, although it was styrofoam, did the trick!
