Think my dealer was beating on my car??

My Camaro is in for a new power steering pump and I was showing a buddy onstar mylink and I noticed my milage changed by 11 miles since I dropped it off at the dealer. My "miles til empty" or whatever you want to call it went from 127 to 86 in those 11 miles. I know they dont need to even drive the car to find out whats wrong with it and even if the tech wanted to drive the car it didnt need to be driven that long or hard. Should I let it go because they are doing their best to get my car done?? They are overnighting a pump for me and promised I would be able to pick it up tomorow after work. So what would you do??

Tell them you noticed and you don't expect it to be driven any more than a block or so to test out the new pump, shame on them.

Talk to the main service manager about it and rip them a new one. Hell, you made get some free oil changes out of it. The steering pump could be diagnosed right there in dealer lot or even up to a mile of driving. Driving all those miles is driving majority straight...really fast. Not diagnosticle. I would also call the polics station and make sure he didnt get ticketed in your car.

YOu do know that your MPG and Miles till empty will go down if your car is sitting at idle or if your running it on a lift. Did your odometer miles go up? Thats the only way to tell if they drove it.

I realize that. Thats why I was asking you guys instead of flipping out. I thought of that but 11 miles?? But to use 41 miles worth of fuel in 11 miles on the odometer??

you gotta leave the car on while you check for leaks few test drives etc. would you rather have like $10 of gas gone or would you like to be back the next day for the same problem cause they put it and and parked it. Althought they could have beaten it good techs will always test drive before and after a few times.

Yea. I understand that but 11 miles?? To check for power steering fluid leaks?? You can do that by turning the steering wheel while its off the ground bleeding it. And they still have to actually do the work. They dont have the parts for the repair yet.

11 miles seems pretty damn high. i'm a mechanic, and my typical test drive (after installing a rack and pinion, control arms, struts, anything that needs a noise/leak check) is less than 3 miles. quick spurt on the highway, and then some back roads to check for turning/bumps/noises/creaks/groans/starting and stopping. that's it. 11 miles seems pretty hellacious, and they shouldn't be romping on the car either. when i test drive customer's vehicles, i drive it better than my own, and i'm anal about my car. lol. i'd ask some questions of the service manager next time you see him.

Exactly. But the worst part is it hasn't even been fixed yet. It was driven like that with a power steering pump whining like crazy.
