Camaro SS V8 is the biggest engine that avoids the Gas Guzzler Tax

The Camaro SS V8 is the biggest engine that avoids the Gas Guzzler Tax.

"...Meanwhile, it's fitting that the biggest-displacement engine on the list is found under the hood of some good-old-fashioned American iron. The 2014 Chevy Camaro SS displaces 6.2-liters of Red, White and Blue glory, while returning 15/24/18, city/highway/combined mpg with the six-speed automatic gearbox. It's worth noting that the supercharged ZL1 and the 7.0-liter Z/28 both get dinged for GGT...."

Just basing that on information like the above. I really haven't looked at the window stickers that closely.

It's rated at 14 city/21 highway, but I don't know if that's GGT territory or not. Still, for a $43,770 base... you can have it. It's ugly. It's a 4-door sedan. And it has no business being named "SS". Sorry, but that last complaint is a pet peeve of mine.

And it comes standard with the 6-speed auto transmission. Why didn't GM saddle the SS with AFM and dodge the GGT? Idiots!

Isn't the Camaro SS marketed at 19 combined?

If it were 18 then we would be paying the tax, I thought...

I have to agree with the name, but I like the looks and the interior is fantastic.

It's because of the skip-shift on the 6MT and AFM on the autos. With the skip-shift Chevy can claim that "normal driving conditions" means shifting from 1st gear to 4th gear at 30 km/h. While this does decrease fuel mileage it is annoying when you push the clutch in only to realize afterwards that car decided you are only allowed to shift into 4th gear.

SS is a low volume model. GM doesn't care if it gets taxed.

when this occurs... I just go to 3rd gear

I always figured GM tuned the car at the edge of the gas guzzler tax. I think Dodge did the same but since their cars are heavier, only have 375 hp.
