My 2012 has been at the dealer for one week today for bad heater core. I started smelling coolant then some hot coolant dripped on my wife's foot while driving so in to the dealer I went. Windshield is out and heater core goes in today or tomorrow. Until then I'm driving a 2013 silverado lt while on vacation. I'll follow up when I get it back.

My camaro started leaking coolant in the passanger side as well(inside). I also found coolant on my garage floor. Then today I tried to see where the leak was coming from and could not find a leak from inside or outside my car....I could however smell it if my heater was on. Is this normal? I would assume that if the heater core is busted, then it should leak whenever the car is on or has been driven.

Add another 2010 to the list!!!!

We got the burning anti-freeze smell when we switched over to heat. We dropped it off at the dealer Sunday night and they confirmed it was the heater core, and would take a week to fix. What a nightmare!

We bought our car used about 6 months ago and got the extended warranty through CarMax. They are paying for the part, the repair, the removal and installation of the windshield, but NOT the cost of a new windshield!

According to the Chevy dealer, there is a gasket seal needed to install the windshield and you can't buy that separate!!! You have to buy a new windshield with the seal gasket.

Hubby called and tried to find out why we had to pay for the windshield, when it needed to be removed to replace the part that IS covered by warranty. Best he could do, was get them to split the cost in half with us.

I posted in the Air Conditioning Issues thread about what is going on with mine. Blown evaporator core on my 2012 SS...

So far it has been a nightmare with the dealer I took it to damaging parts and pieces, delay after delay, I am just now requesting a rental but they have had my car about 9 days now and previously had it for 2 the week before diagnosing the problem.

Thumbs down Add another

I'll add my lfx to the list, with 15k miles though. I think it's asinine to have this problem. Just saying.

Electrolysis is one of the main reasons for heater core problems. Poor electrical grounds, low coolant levels, and poorly installed aftermarket electronics can all cause electrolysis.
For everyone with heater core issues......have you checked the level of your coolant lately? Do you have any aftermarket electronics (i.e. sounds systems) installed in your car? I'm curious to know if these are trends with heater core failures.

Here are some links on what I'm talking about:

I saw in one of the Camarow Now magazines where they installed HUD in a camaro that didn't come with it...took the dash out....did not take the windshield out....wazzup with the heater core needing the windshield out for install?....they even commented having a rock accidentally hit the windshield to get a free replacement from insurance...but said the non HUD windshield was 85% reflective and would work just fine....I think someone is milking the cow

Hi red_johnny,

I would be happy to assist in a resolution for you. Even though the warranty has expired, we do treat each situation on a case by case basis, and I would like to schedule an appointment for you at your local dealership for a diagnosis. Thanks Jessica for the help. Got my repair done. They did have to replace the windshield. I am very pleased with your assistance in this. FYI to anyone who gets this done with a aftermarket radio. If you have any additional cables such as a IPOD or USB cable run into your glove box be sure to specifically ask that it be run that way upon the vehicle returning to you. Also, if you have stuff in your glove box and arm rest box make sure YOU empty it out otherwise it will be across your back seat. I am not upset with the dealership as I should have realized this stuff myself before dropping the car off. Overall, they saved my butt. I do wonder if this will end up being a recall though.
