Advertising Fees....How Much is too much?
I posted this in the RI thread of the New England forum but decided to move it over here for a broader range of opinions.
I'm curious what some of us have paid in advertising fees specifically? With today's reveal of the 2014 I really am not a fan, so it was finally time to go order my first brand new car. Went to one of the local dealers and we haggled pretty good on the price of my trade and I got them to a point I thought was fair for both ends. Salesman said they were willing to go invoice on a 2lt with me and printed out two sheets showing invoice and msrp from an "autopartners.net" website. Invoice was like $50 above edmunds invoice price but I wasn't going to squabble over that and it wasn't a huge deal. Then he said there'd be $800 in advertising fees. This is my first new car but I thought that was a bit hi so I walked. I wasn't even out of the dealership 10 minutes when I got a call saying they'd knock it down to $500 for advertising fees. What have you guys paid in advertising fees? BTW the car built on this site was 2LT Inferno Exterior Inferno Interior Hood and Hockey Stripes Auto Spare Tire Quarter Flares. Their invoice was 31,139 and original price with the first advertising fee was 31939. Am I wrong and just new to this or is that nuts for advertising fees? I'd say an advertising fee is 100% bs, no matter the amount.

I have never heard of that before either, but maybe my dealer folds that into the handling and other junk fee's.....
What is the total junk fees you are paying for the car? Maybe it equals out. |

For whatever reason they talked value of my trade first. Didn't care because we talked prices of each seperately.
Told them exactly what I wanted, was shown a print out of the sites numbers but was told it was missing the advertising fees. Not sure where they got the number from and said it would be $800. Said nope, deal breaker and left. Got the call 5 mins later dropping it to $500 and just said I'd think about it. Nothing else was discussed, didn't get into finance or anything. Apparently the fleet manager wasn't there. |

They tried that Advertising Fee crap on me when I ordered my 1LE, told them they could stick the $800 fees and started to walk...then they were able to waive them on the spot....don't pay it...

I guess I'll see what happens tomorrow, will they call? who knows.
If not I'll hit the other chevy dealerships in my area. |

Advertising fees? Never heard of that and have purchased many new cars.
Don't walk, run away. If you don't give Becky D. a shot at your business you are cheating yourself. Find a car on a lot that is equipped the way you want and try to buy it, no way I would pay invoice on a new camaro!! However your trade may complicate things for you. |

There is such a thing called advertising fee , but a dealer can waive or discount whatever they want to sell a car. The trick to buying a car is to buy from a dealer who will give you the best out the door price. Shop around and be ready to walk. Buy only when you feel you have found the best price. Remember , they only have the upper hand if you give it to them. Even when your dealing with a car that is in demand , you might have to pay a higher price , but as long if its the best price you can find.

according to my research from edmunds, "advertising fees" should be right in the GM invoice and not "extra" fees tacked on by the dealer.
From the way hurd was doing it, they were simply tacked on. I'm not someone who thinks dealers shouldn't make profit, that's why they're in the business. That said, I'm going to get the best deal possible and the thought that a buyer has to pay the advertising fee for a company seems nuts to me, said company pays for advertising to get business. We don't go to wal-mart, spend $1000 on a new tv then another 200 because they advertised a sale for that model tv. |
