Mecum L88 Corvette sells for record price.

Did anyone else watch the Mecum Auto Auction today and see the crazy price the 1967 L88 Corvette Convertible sold for? It sold for a solid $3.2 million , absolutely crazy! As much as I like Corvettes, I could never spend that much on one car.

The two '69 ZL-1 Corvettes aren't worth 3.2 million in my opinion. Why the F is an L88 worth it?

You can buy a restored Bf 109E for that kind of money. That's a German fighter plane from WWII...

Chris, if you call Roger Judski in FL and make him that offer, I'm afraid you'd be turned down...

someone correct me if I'm wrong which I probably am, but isn't the L-88 like the rarest of rare Corvettes?

No you`re not wrong. Of the 20 L-88`s made in 1967, there are only 14 known to exist.

A little more background on this car; http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...=DA0913-165417

L-88s, by the numbers:

'67 = 20
'68 = 80
'69 = 116

Actually, the rarest L-88 combo is the '69 with M40 Automatic: total = 17. One was road-tested in the March '69 issue of Hot Rod Magazine, during winter monsoon season, and had to be bumped into neutral to stop on city streets! Tight converter + high idle speed = very low vacuum for the HD Power Brakes.

1969 ZL1 production was purported to be 2, in total. The one that Roger Judski owns, at Roger's Corvette Center in Maitland FL (sub. of Orlando), is fully documented and now mated with its original engine. The car was originally ordered and used by a St. Louis Corvette Plant engineer. Nice demo!

BTW, when you get into the rarefied world of MILLION DOLLAR collector cars, "it's only money", to those buyers. Hemicuda Convertibles. 427 SC Cobras (genuine, with papers). It's this, or a painting, or...

They're not bought to be daily drivers...nor, perhaps, to even be driven...

And clearly, @ Mecum, there were at least TWO people who thought their "portfolios", and garages, deserved that L-88...with supporting bank account$...

An aircraft needs a hangar, which isn't easily or inexpensively environment-controlled. A car? Put it in the anti-room, or the man-cave. No problem...

1983 Corvette = rarest. Only 2 built, none sold to the public. One destroyed and the other sits in Chevy's museum.
