Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Last night I got a low pressure light in my back left tire. So I went to the compressor and filled up all the tires to about 40psi. Then I went to the tire monitor system screen and the gauge still read odd low numbers like 33 36 34 35. And my trusty handheld gauge said 40-41 in all tires. So I clicked the reset button, the horn honked 3 times and scared the hell outta me, then the screen went blank and said "Service Tire Pressure Monitoring System" with a big wrench. Anybody else had this problem?

From the owners manual.
Reset the tire learn mode. Each tire will have to have air added or removed until the horn beeps, the horn beeping means that the air pressure sensor has learned that tires pressure. Just did it yesterday, had to read the book. Mike |

Well now when I press the reset button nothing happens. It is just a screen with a car and "--" by each tire.

I've got three vehicles with tire pressure sensors. When temperatures drop in the fall, mine will all say low pressure. I will air them up to the correct pressure, but the monitor still shows low pressure until the tire monitor system resets itself after a few miles.
None of the cars has reset just sitting there, immediately after correcting the pressure. I don't know if the system resets because of the the time involved (so many minutes), or after distance (so many miles). But I have never needed to "relearn" the sensors with the computer. I like them, they have found a few slow leaks from an embedded object. I just wish I could program the pressure range for them to work in. |

Mine's done that like 4 time already, once it was the tire sensor, another time it was the valve stem, and two other times they just reprogrammed them.

...IMO is stupid/annoying. I routinely inspect my tires, manually check the pressure, and add air as needed. Never had a problem with this method. I really don't understand why a Camaro has to have the same features as a Cadillac.

Tires should be filled to 36 psi cold and will usually heat up to 40 in summer, 37-38 in rain and 37 after a 20 mile 40 degree day drive. Maybe 34 cold in the summer, but not in the winter. You are killing the treadwear and rolling resistance.
I wouldn't recommend 32 psi cold with these tires, especially this time of year. JMO My tires were topped off a few weeks ago with 1-2 psi each when the temps dropped.

As I understand all vehicles will have to have TPMS in the future as mandated by the government, part of the TREAD act of 2000 (Explorer rollovers were a contributor to this)

Over inflating your tires will just wear out the middle of the tread first, ride harder, and have less grip than one properly inflated.
I believe the pressure recommendations given on the door post are for "loaded" vehicles. |
