I thought about holding out for the 'vert, but I considered the price increases that will likely take place in the 1.5 years between getting my 2SS now (Sept '09 till spring '11). Plus, as said above, expect another 4K on the conservative side. That pushes a 2SS well into the 40k's.
I bought now.

When it comes to sports cars, coupes are always better in my opinion. Not only are Coupes lighter, more "complete", and more aerodynamic, they are also SAFER. I don't know about you, but I will always prefer a good structure over my head, especially in a sports car!

I've never been a fan of convertibles, especially with performance cars. Chassis rigidity is lost on convertible cars. This limits the handling and power potential. If you want the "wind in your face" experience, get a motorcycle. Just my opinion...

Pictures of the convertible do not look good to me, all the styling is lost with the ragtop.

From what I heard, the convertible is gonna START at $28,000 so that might be something to think about.

I've owned a rag top for over 7 years now.
As said before, you gotta worry about some jerk slashing your top. The more you use your top the more wear and tear you'll put on it and eventually it'll wear through somewhere and will need a replacement. Loud as hell with the top up. That extra bit of material flapping into the wind makes a hell of a lot of racket. Also a lot of noise is generated from the top vibrating from not to nice roads. More so than if you just dropped the damn top. If this is your DD and you live where you get snow you'll be spending every 4 hours during heavy snow fall clearing your top off in open lots to prevent your roof from caving in. That canvas/vinyl sucks for insulation. Sucks for keeping the warmth/cold in when you need it. You do notice a bit more of a body roll than if you had a solid or hard top. That's why I chose a coupe this time around rather than a convertible. I do love it during nice days, but the very nature of keeping my vehicle secure with vinyl and all the headaches that may come with it. To some that may say that a crook can easily break a window, it's cheaper and easier to replace a window than it is to replace a rag top. Now if Chevy took a page from Mazda's book and offered an automatic folding hard top that takes about the same amount of space as the rag top does they'd have a winner. Then you can have the best of both worlds. Can be a much quieter coupe when the weather sucks with a lot more security and stability. Then when the weather's nice you could just hit a button and the top automatically folds down. |

Every convertible I've ever been in was great with top down but when up it was loud (not always good) had less visibility and just wasn't as nice a driving experience as a hard top. Plus with the top up some cars look crappy. So if you live in an area with nice weather year round go for it if not sunroof it is. Then again it's your car get what YOU want. Just keep in mind you'll have a longer wait for a vert and you get to pay a lot more.
