Early Detonation?

I had a comp cam installed 2 months ago by Matt at Florida Speed and Power. The car feels amazing I have only put about 500 miles on since the install, every once in a while when I take off from a stop i hear a pop sound, that sounds like it's coming from the CAI. It sounds like a backfire under the hood, if that makes sense, before I go making a phone call and a 3 hour drive. I thought I would ask if this is a problem or is it a normal once in a while event. My engine is an LS3 with a K&N typhoon CAI and LTH with high flow cats. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Also it never does it at idle.

Does it only do it when you accelerate aggressively with traction control on?

No, it's when I take off at normal acceleration, doesn't happen often.

Well.. it's definitely not normal. My first thought was traction control jacking with you in places you hadn't experienced before. Any other info you can provide?

When it does it, it bucks or hesitates, then it's fine.

A vacuum gauge would certainly help out trouble shooting this.

Does your tach needle move erratically when it exhibits this symptom?

Last but certainly not least, check your spark plugs for tightness and ditto on the plug boots. This IMHO would be best case scenario if it's spark related, but doubtful..check though.

I doubt it's the latter, sounds like a lean condition back firing through the intake, wish a vacuum gauge was up and running.

I always thought mine only did it when I was accelerating hard, but who knows... I run with TC off all the time just to avoid it. You might try driving around without TC and see if it still does it. If you can log it that would be great. Otherwise... give Matt a call. He sure wouldn't want your car acting up like it is.

It'll be hard to get a video or sound as it's only done it 2-3 times and I can't predict when it will happen. I think I'll give Matt from FSP a call, doesn't sound like this is something that happens normally. I only use 93 fuel from Shell or Sunoco.

I will check that out with the plugs and caps. Thanks for the info!

Probably the best plan. If he built the car, then he is most likely to know what's up.
