Ginger the Vert got a 9" w/4.57s!

Just finished up my install. I got a crazy great deal from a buddy on this DSS 9" with 3.70s. Since my car is so heavy and I always want to maximize my set up I decided to order some Yukon 4.57 gears. Got them installed in the center section and got to installing!

I had Ginger topless with her ass in the air waiting for the 9".

It was a pretty straightforward install, took me about 5 hours over two days (had the hardest time trying to find a center section gasket). The gears were set up by a local Mustang shop "Precision Mustang Performance".

I was a little worried because the guy said the gears were being a pain to set up. When I finally drove it, i was . The gears are SUPER quiet, even quieter than stock! Also, the dreaded 5th gen drivetrain slop/clunk is GONE! The car feels so solid when taking off now, not all jerky like before. I LOVE IT!

The 4.57 gears are VERY interesting (especially with my shorter 27" tall tires, it makes my 4.57s feel like 4.88s if I had stock size tires). I short shift my car while just tutting around town to get the absolute best MPG out of my car, I shift at about 1,500 maybe as high as 2,000 rpms, I know it sounds crazy but I get GREAT gas mileage like this (I just got 19 mpg out of my last tank with 90% street driving). Shifting this short with 4.57s is comical! When I leave the light I'm in third gear right when I reach the end of the intersection. I am in sixth gear by about 35 mph, LOL. It kind of feels like I'm driving an 18 wheeler.

Highway driving is not that bad, 70 mph is now about 2,300 rpms. The funny thing is that my speedo has to be calibrated so when I'm going 74 mph my speedo actually reads about 100 mph! I'll get that fixed some time next week.

All in all I am ecstatic with the 9" and 4.57s. I was a little worried about making my car less driveable with the 9" ( I had a quick 98 SS that I went a little too race car with and it wasn't fun to drive anymore) but I think it is actually MORE driveable now. I'm actually asking the wife if she has any errands for me to run or wants me to go get her anything so I can go drive the car. It is so much more fun to drive now!

Here are some more pics of my install.

I still have them, I usually only slap them on when I go to the track and I don't go anywhere near as much as I would like. I think I only went once last year and only once this year.

You really think that small of a difference will be noticeable?

When choosing gears/tires you want to choose a combo that will put you at the top of fourth when crossing the traps. 4.57s and a 28" tire should top me out at about 124 at the end of fourth. I have a pretty big cam that I bought (over 2 years ago!) and that should get me up to about 122 mph.

My last car was a daily driven 98 SS that had 4.10s/turbo 350/8" 5,300 stall and then swapped back to an M6 with 4.56s. I've always thought "Go big or go home" when it comes to gears.

Although I'm not running the shorter tire, welcome to the club! I love my 4.57's and it didn't take me long at all to get used to them. I agree, that it has made the car a lot more enjoyable to drive.

Is that a Moser center section?
