I was gonna ask the same question. I just got another application from gm for the card. Is it worth it and what's the most u can get as a discount towards ur new car purchase? I guess my question is, is there a limit on the discount?

The 'old card' - not sure if offered had 5% on 'any purchase - up to $500 / yr. They stay with you for 7 years (max $3500.00) before the oldest starts to drop off based on the month of purchase. Their statement keep you pretty informed.

The 'other / newer card GM' offers I believe has no annual cap - but you are limited to how much can be applied to GM vehicles when you purchase, where the 'older card' was without restrictions.

They (GM MC) are always asking me to switch - which leads me to believe the 'older card' may no longer be offered. I suspect I am 'grandfathered'. But you should check it out vs taking my word here.

I have had this card for close to 20 yrs and used it several times. Most recently, the 2010 Camaro used a little under $1000. But the 2008 Suburban was around $3400.00 points used.

I always use the card to charge the first $10k in the annual cycle, and then park the card until the next anniversary date where I can add another $500. I'll charge a 'stick of gum' if they take the card. I'm good at paying the bill too.

do you apply your credit after you worked out a deal, or do you need to let the dealer know first

It is like cash to the dealership - it's your money - just another part of squaring up the bill. They do not need to know until your are asked, 'how would you be paying for this'.

Another benefit lately, is that GM will raise the value of the point balance. Back in January, my bal was about $750. , they increased it to $3000. for a limited time and resticted it to some models.

Its actually my sig. I tracked the build of my car when I ordered it back in september 2009. It shows each time my car moved closer to production and the dates it moved up. 6000 means delivered to customer. I picked my car up on November 12, 2009.
