Why do other drivers flash their lights?

I've had oncoming drivers flash their lights during the day a few times. My DRL's are off, there doesn't seem to be any speed traps, and I'm not heading straight for them or driving recklessly. Is it a compliment or should I flip them off?

They're probably trying to use Morse code to say "hey nice car!" but they can never get the whole sequence out before you pass them.... j/k

Most likely a compliment..

There are a few reasons for a flash:
1. Cops ahead
2. Hello! or nice car
3. To make you get over a lane (if from behind)
4. To signal they will yield to you (at an intersection or something).

If its none of these, then I have no clue

5. They think or you do have you highbeam's on and they would like you to turn them off.

My experience is split, sometimes it's a cop up ahead, sometimes I figure it is a compliment (through the day) and the odd time I think it's the brightness of the HIDS.

Oh, man. Why do some drivers use turn signals? Is it because they want me to turn so Im not behind them, or when they use it behind me is it some sort of signal for me to pull over so they can tell me how awsome my car is? What gives?

Also sometimes people put on their dome lights and it looks like they are looking around in their car for something. Do you think thats what they are doing?

It is a vain attempt to get your attention to let YOU know that they wish they had your car because the Camaro is so AWESOME!!

In addition to the reasons above, I'm sure everyone knows this, but it is a signal to remind you to turn your lights on. Maybe the other driver was just confused, and thought it was dark outside... and he was concerned that you couldn't see where you were going

(I know, not likely, haha...)

I'll flash my head lights when deer are close to the road, hoping people will slow down and not hit them... or cops

Here's a good story...

Few years back we found a 1982 El Camino in pretty decent shape w/ about 35k miles on it. After we bought it I started driving it to and from work. On my way home one day I decided to take a road I usually NEVER take because cops always sit there and it's known by everyone. So needless to say a cop gets behind me and as I'm going up the road, and I'm following a truck and a mini-van. Apparently this car we just purchased had headlight switch issues and kept flashing from high beam to low beam when I hit a slight bump (never did this until the cop was behind me btw). So he pulls me over for "Speeding", I was behind a truck and a soccer mom mind you... and "flashing my lights to warn the other drivers there was a cop behind me"

He completely thought I was full of $Hit when he asked me why I was flashing the people in front of me and I told him the lights were doing it on their own...

I get that alot with the Halos on with the HID headlights around here.

I just flick my high beams back at them real quick to either say My High beams were not on or, Thank You for the heads up for what danger could be up ahead. Police,Deer,Construction,Accident,Crazy women driving Humvees on a cell phone going postal etc...

Most of the time people see the HIDs and Halos on at the same time and think there High Beams.

On Jims Silverado he has some aftermarket DOT approved headlights with halos which i guess from a distance looks like all four lights are on but there not bright.
He gets a lot of people flicking there headlights at him.

Some people still are not familiar or use to them.
I know of one older person thinks when they see all four lights on even if there DRL's on the lower valance they think it's high beams!
Hard to teach some old people new tricks!
