Headers, cats, tune, intake with scoop and washer fluid relocation kit would help more.

After that you'll get the most out of wider tires.

If you read my first post you would realize I already was aware of that, and it's not just a track car. The 1LE is a car you can enjoy on the streets, at the drag strip, use it as a DD, and take it to the track to have some fun. If I wanted only a "TRACK CAR" I would of waited for the Z28.

I think if you went to a wider tire with a lower traction rating like 100 (more sticky) versus 200 (less sticky; that's on the car now) you will get better traction and grab when launching. Be careful some people here have had axles break with wheel hop and chatter in the rear. So, you'll need to experiment!

Also a wider tire in the rear will introduce understeer something that Chevrolet spent time to eliminate on this car.

Their are two many other variable that can affect your 1/4 mile time before the 285 or 305 would increase ot decrease your 1/4 time because of their negligible differences in size, weight and overall diameter. Everything from weather, surface prep, fuel volume, shift points etc can change the E/T.

For example. 15 gallons of gas weighs in the neighborhood (depending on ethanol content) 91lbs. 4 gallons, about 24 lbs. The 76lbs will make the car car slower, but wait a minute.....that is more weight over the rear wheels to aid in traction. The 76 lbs may help if the track surface is not prepped

Example 2. If you put two drivers in a the same car and one has 285 and the other has 305. The better driver will win a drag race everytime.

Bottom line. If you like the looks of the 305 and the coin to spend I would do it. But I would also spend more time learning to drive the car instead of worrying about the diff in tire size as seat time will far outweigh any 285/305 changes.

Matt
This is the best response I this thread. Either tire would not make an appreciable difference, so if you appearance is important then put 305's on. If you want a faster car add power.

If I owned a 1LE I would actually run the tire sizes I have on my car now, aesthetically they fit the car better. I do not road race so I will never feel the difference in a daily driving scenario.

Just my opinion...

Too close to call without testing by the most consistent driver you know.

If the 305's don't help the launch at all, you could end up two or three hundredths and a fraction of a mph slower. I doubt that the average driver is that consistent, so at least you wouldn't be able to isolate the 305's as hurting you.

Even if they do help the launch a little - which I suspect may be the case with the 305 being less stretched out - it'd still be a driver's race between two 1LE's identical except for this difference in rear tire size.

Alright thank you for your feedback!! I think I will end up getting the 305's to the rear.

I thought about going with 305s too since drag racing is mostly what I do with my car. But the 1LE handling feels so balanced and agile the way it is, I would hate to add any understeer. And I intend to buy a slightly stiffer rear bar to get the car neutral, like my last SS.

I do think the wider rear tires would look cool, but I would rather the car drive at its best. Later once I get my 1LE solidly in the 12s with more power, I will see what DRs will do for the car.

Once the original Goodyears wear out I may go with them again since they feel so good. But I have heard Michelin Pilots have a slightly softer sidewall. This would help the drag launch more than slightly wider F1 Goodyears. And you could keep the 1LE understeer at its current minimal level.

IMO the 305 Goodyears are for looks only. But nothing wrong with that as a priority. When I bought my 1LE I thought I would only mod for function, but I can't help myself to personalize it. The 1LE is one of the best all around performance cars you can buy at any price. You can't go wrong.
