Front end is perfect. Backend is where the imagination stopped and the concept has come back to haunt me.

From what I have heard, the chances of a mid engined Corvette being built are approxmately 0.

On the other hand, Cadillac is supposed to be entering something like 5 brand new product segments in the next few years. My guess is the car we think of as the Corvette 'Zora' is actually more of a Cadillac Cien

Here's the best evidence of a future mid-engine Corvette, Cadillac, etc. This car is a prototype, test vehicle for something very interesting..

The vette would've been a mid-engined car if GM went ahead with their rotary/wankel style engine back in the 70s
gas prices ruin lots of ideas

This also is good evidence making the case for going mid engine and the history of team Corvette exploring that layout in 03/04 but got killed during the bankruptcy.

Quote:
2003... Tadge Juechter had a PowerPoint presentation demonstrating, very credibly, that the C6 ZR1 was at the limit of usable rear-wheel-drive performance...

Rick Wagoner's reaction was the same as mine: "Oh, no, no. We're not going mid-engine." He was a great fan of the ZR1—the car's code name was "Blue Devil" because Rick had played basketball for Duke—and he felt that was about as good as it gets. He thought a little more power next time would fill the bill. Problem is, lap times would be no better using the same architecture, even with, say, 750 hp. The car would just be a handful, à la Dodge Hellcat. But after seeing Tadge's presentation, Rick said, "Well, that's pretty convincing."

If Ford can build a GT, why cant Chevy build a Zora?

Speaking of which, I just don't know how many people are going to be willing to pay $400,000 for a car with a blue oval on it. That is Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari F12 Berlinetta territory.

There is a massive difference between can't and won't.

Ford has their own reasons for building a new GT, and odds are making money isn't one of them. Its a marketing exerciese more than anything else. They want a halo sports car. They want a technological showpiece. They want to win at LeMans again. The way to accomplish all those things at once is a Ford GT.

Meanwhile, Chevrolet has a halo sports car. They have technological show pieces. And motorsports cred? Got that too. They don't need something like the GT to do those things. If they're looking for a car with maximum performance, they could likely get better results reinvesting the money that would be spent on a mid-engined car back into improving the Corvette.

Which is probably why they say they intend on selling hundreds, rather than thousands of new GTs.

There was an interview I saw last year where Ed Welburn stated that the corvette was never intentionally a front engine only car. It just kept making good sense for every generation to put the engine up front so they did. I think it might have been the Jay Leno's Garage C7 walkaround video. I'll see if I can find it.
