Battery Questions

Wet Cell or Dry Cell?

I recently discovered the battery is located in the trunk of the new Camaro.
Great place to put the battery, IMO
Hot rodders have been doing this for years, mainly for weight distribution.
Seems to me that GM has done this for the same reason.
I'm sure that is is contained in an enclosure of some sort.

Does anyone know?

Is the enclosure metal or plastic? Probably plastic.
Is it a plastic box bolted to the bottom of the trunk well? What about venting?
Or, is it a separate compartment under the trunk floorpan, accessed through a trap door?
Or, is the battery just strapped down to the tunk floorpan with plastic cover over it?

I see the the postive battery cable is inside the trunk compartment;
so I would assume that a separte compartment is not the case.

So, if it is a wet cell battery.
My very first mod on the car would be a change to a dry cell battery.
Would doing this affect the warranty?
I know that I don't care to have a half gallon or so of sulfuric-acid sitting in the same compartment as I do.
IMO A dry cell would be a far safer option.

Anyone seen what sulfuric-acid doed to human tissue; it's not pretty.

And yes the trunk is part of the cocpit, it's only separated by a folding seat back;
and in most cars not even by that much.
There is no bulkhead separtating the trunk like the firewall separates the engine compartment.

Anyone know? Wet Cell or Dry Cell?

Battery is located in a well that holds the (optional on V6 cars only) space-saver spare tire. It sits under the spare. On SS's and cars that didn't order the spare there is a small tire inflation compressor in with the battery. There are some pictures of the battery in the well in the Indy show pictures thread.

Great picture

Oh MY GOD!!!! It looks like a Wet Cell.
Hope I'm wrong!

If it is a Wet Cell. Looks like I'll be swapping that out for a Dry Cell.

Will that affect the warranty an any way?
Can anyone tell me?

Does ACDelco even make a dry cell battery? I didn't think they did.

Here's a picture from Heather's SS:

Is that a vent tube that I see on the negative side of the battery?

It might be a battery purpose built for the new Camaro.

I wonder what it's RPO is.

Once again great picture MLL67RSSS

Why would changing the battery effect your warranty? Of course it wouldn't. There is nothing wrong with the battery being in the trunk. heck, Corvettes use to have it behind the drivers seat and Audis use to have it beneath the rear seat. Come to think of it, the VW Beetle had the battery under the rear seat also. And that was before sealed type batteries were the norm.

Thank Txturbo

Don't get me wrong I really like where the battery is.

But; it realy should be a dry cell.

I have seen the damage cause by a rollover in a VW with the battery under the rear seat.
The person lost the use of their arm from that battery acid; and again I will say not a pretty site.
Sure a freak accident but it can happen.
I still think a dry cell would be way safer.

I guess that the stats on this issue are low enough that it is a non-issue.

Anyone have more info on this battery.
Is it the same as use in the Vet? It must be.

Optima isn't worth the money, I have had to and they both crapped our in a year, I ended up going to autozone and getting a 5 year battery for half the price and no issues with it at all...

GM has been putting batteries in the trunk for several years now, ever since the Saturn Ion Came out. I know for a fact the ION, Cobalt and HHR all have the battery in the back. I see no problem with them being there.

I'm getting the 2SS and I ordered a spare tire because if you get a hole in the side wall the air compressor isn't going to help one bit. But I'm wondering, does me ordering the spare tire mean I'm not going to get the air compressor also? I mean it should come with it if it's standard equipment for the 2SS but I didn't know if they were just going to leave it out because I got the spare tire also. Anyone know for sure?

you can't get the spare with the 2SS... but even if you could you would not get a compressor if you get the spare tire.
