GM cars could get BMW engines

Quote:
BMW will decide by the end of the year if it will sell engines and other components to General Motors and other rival automakers, says Friedrich Eichiner, the carmaker's board member for corporate and brand development.

When asked if BMW is talking to GM, Daimler and Fiat about supplying engines, Eichiner said: "We are talking with those companies you mentioned."

BMW will decide by the end of the year because "it does not make sense to go on talking and talking forever," Eichiner told Automotive News Europe on the sidelines of a press event here. Selling engines and other components to other automakers is part of BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer's Number One strategic plan to boost the carmaker's profitability.

In February, German media reports said BMW is looking for potential customers for engines and transmissions. Until now, the company has not confirmed that it is talking with GM, Daimler and Fiat.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.... I'm trying to be objective. So, I'll keep thinking about this before I jump in.

GM should buy BMW. Then they could put GM motors in BMWs.

BMW engines are one of the most advanced road car engines ever. If GM does buy an engine, it should be the 4.0 liter V8 in the new E92 M3. thats 420hp, 295 lb ft torque. Sounds good to me!!

Why? BMW engines don't make torque like our small block Chevys. And they have to be revved high to reach peak horsepower. Not to mention the fact that they will undoubtably be very expensive.

If not the engines maybe their dual clutch "M" transmission? I know we have some hard core 6-speed manual fans in this forum and thats great, but I would love to see the Corvette and maybe the Camaro with Dual Clutch type transmission. The Corvette is rumored to get one in the C7 model but thats a long time away.

300 hp, 300 lb/ft TT I6 sounds good to me. I hear those things are as smooth as it gets, and the power is pretty linear too.

I'd rather have the LS3. Lighter, less expensive, more powerful, and likely more reliable

Don’t get too excited… That does not mean they are going in American sold vehicles… Remember GM sells cars all over the world. A little word called Globalization… I’m sure some will pop up but don’t think there replacing, how do the “Snob Nose Germans” put it, oh yeah, “out dated V8 pushrod technology” (that tears their ass up at the track) any time soon…
