Yes the manual cars have cooler lines going from the tranny to the radiator. When I switched my fluid out, I tried to drain the lines to get all fluid possible out of the system, and all I got was some coolant out on the fitting on the rad, so I tightened it back up before I get more than a few drops. So there must be a heat exchanger of some sort inside the Tremec to cool the tranny fluid with antifreeze from the cooling system. The fifth quart of Syncromax is now sitting there collecting dust since I only used 4 to fill it.

WTF, this is some crazy stuff... never ever seen cooling lines to/from a manual.. but the cars I worked on were 70 or earlier.. must be some of that new fangled technology that's more of a pain than does any good... what a world

That could explain why the trans fluid temp runs very close to water temp. Hmmm, any GM techs here car to enlighten us on this.

I drained mine today and filled up up with just less the 4 quarts, I'd say 3.5 - 3.75. Is that still ok?

As long as it's coming out of the fill hole slightly with the car being level, yeah that's fine.

I thought the same thing! FYI: The heat exchanger "floats" inside the lower radiator. If you pull the cooling lines off it falls and is a PITA to get everything hooked back up. I had to get a 9/16 bolt re-cut the threads to grab hold of the cooler and get it back into place. |

I have lots of friends that have tried RP in their Corvette 6 speed manual transmissions, and many have gone back to the GM manual transmission fluid with good results. Sometimes, a manual fluid can be too slick. You need the right viscosity and lubricity for the synchros, etc. to work.
On the Camaro, filling from the top is a good method. On cars where the transmission is only accessible from the bottom, I have also connected a small air compressor tube to the bottle and used air pressure to push the fluid down and up the fill tube. Works very well. |

I was going to buy a 1 Gallon jug of Amsoil. I already have a 5ft length of tube but what I'm wondering is if I use a funnel, will all the fluid go straight into the Transmission or do I need to force it in. I think gravity will let most of it flow in but I'm not so sure about the last little bit.

Yes it should go in no problem. The tranny is vented so air won't need to go back up the tubing. Just fill it till it starts coming back out the fill hole.

I changed mine today, it took only 3 1/2 quarts of royal Purple. I filled it until it ran out. I only had the front up on jack stands, will this be a problem? I filled a milk jug will the old stuff and it was around 3 1/2 quarts. When I took the fill plug off the first time, nothing ran out at the same angle, so I am guessing I am good to go.
