"How It All Went Wrong For The Viper"
Peter De Lorenzo's latest "rant" from his www.autoextremist.com site:
Detroit. "By now, most people who follow this industry know that FCA has chopped $15,000 from the Dodge Viper’s sticker price of $100,000, which translates into a stunning admission that the cult sports car is, for all intents and purposes, dead in the water. How could this happen, you might ask? How could the vaunted Viper end up in the fire sale dustbin, a forlorn afterthought in this red-hot market?" He's never been a "fan" of Marchionne's, and he doesn't hold back much, here. Including a "warning" about Ferrari's possible plight, too... |

Price, not offering a Vert, auto option and where did the extreme part of the Viper go?
I'm a Viper fan, hope to get one within the next 2-3 years. |

Price, price, price. Instead of making the Viper more accessible to more buyers, they made it less accessible and their market dried up. Despite the update and despite the fact it is an all-around better car than when it first came out, it kind of seems like the same car you could get 20 years ago. Only now you're paying $100,000 for it. Doesn't seem worth it when a well-optioned Vette, which is an excellent car for an excellent value, is half as much.

Yep, price. Look at the C7 Vette, awesome performance and at a very very reasonable price that most could pay if they really wanted one. They killed the sales all by themselves.

I wouldn't say teh Viper is "dead in the water". It was meant to be a winner against the Corvette and reach for supercar status. Having said that, supercars demand a supercar price. The Viper never quite made it to that but dealers kept the prices up.
Dealer markups were insane. The reason for the price cut is to get the price down because of those markups. dodge should have "manned up" with dealers a decade ago and got it under control, but they never did.

Woodhouse has sold 13 of it's stock of 24 in the last 2 weeks.
It's the price, period. The ultimate american track car ... or, the Z/28 ... I can't decide! I've got the winter to ponder the possibilities ... Z06? Nah, FI is for the street/strip.
