Question about changing wheel size

Hi everyone,

First of all, I don't know too much about cars, so maybe these questions are somehow stupid

I got a Camaro 2LS with 18-inch ugly wheels on and I'm going to upgrade to a bigger size.

1). If I upgrade to a set of 20-inch wheels, what should I do about the TPMs?

2). Any potential problems with changing wheel size?

3). What are the differents of OEM, take-off from new car, and factory replica? Which one you guys recommand more?

4). If I got new wheels online, how much I gonna spend if I want dealer do everything else for me to put them on?

1. take the sensors out of your current wheels and put them in your new wheels, or buy new ones.

2. none, just ensure the offsets are correct for the new wheel. just ensure your new tires are the correct size such that the overall diameters are the same or very close, this way your speedo will read correctly.

3. depending on the mfg., sometimes their offset is a bit different, but they still fit. as far as Repop vs OEM, personally I perfer the OEM, but as long as each are of good quality, either works fine.

4. to answer this.....you would have to talk to the tires shop you want to use. If you are buying the wheels/tires from someone like Tire Rack, you can go to their site and they have a list of tire/wheel shops that they deal with in your area......if you buy a set of wheels/tires that are already mounted and ready....jsut put them on and drive, you would just need to get the TPMS sensors reset, and most all descent tire shops can/will do that for you.


oh and btw...... Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Although you didn't mention this, make sure that the wheels you want come in a wide enough width for the tire size you're interested in - or conversely that the tire brand/model you want comes in sizes that properly fit the wheels. For example, a 275/40-20 tire has no business being mounted on 20 x 8 wheels (for this example, 9" should be considered the absolute minimum wheel width).

Just another thought, in street driving you won't actually need anything wider than 275's. If you become at least semi-serious about autocross, road course HPDE, or drag racing where you eventually would want to go beyond 275, you'll find out soon enough that keeping a separate set of wheels and tires dedicated only to the activity of your choice can be a really good idea.
