Interesting Ambient Lighting Idea

So today we were discussing gear shift lights and I was contemplating adding one to my Mustang. Then I decided I'd just wait and add it to my Camaro instead, since that's the car I actually care about.

Unfortunately, in my opinion at least, a lot of shift lights look out of place and can easily look tacky. (Plus its hard to explain on a first date what the contraption is while insisting that no, your car isn't a race car). However, a brainstorm then hit me.

What if you could attach the programmable unit to the interior ambient lighting so that, when the unit was on, the ambient lighting would glow rather than a shift light?

What do ya'll think?

totally plausible. hack up a shift light kit, tap the ambient lights live wire w/ the wires that went to the old shift light (will most likely need to up the voltage though) and add a simple on/off switch to enable/dissable it whenever you like.

your simply adding another switch to the ambient light, in this case the new switch has logic circuitry (almost like a motion sensor for a porch light)

That's along the same lines I was thinking. Just have an unobtrusive switch somewhere so that it doesn't get too annoying.

No I think that would be sweet but then I would also think that it would be cool to be able to keep it on all the time too.

Yeah, I'd like to just keep it on all the time at night. But it'd look pretty cool.

That is a really good idea. Especially if you could set it up to say switch to red (from blue or any other color) when its time to shift. Then once you shift it goes back to the original color

That's a bad@$$ idea!!! What controls the ambient lighting though? Is it as simple as like the courtesy lights or does like a body control computer control it? If that's the case, it might be a lot more complicated to mess around with doing what we're thinking. Regardless, it would be a great idea, IMVHO.

Isn't the lighting done w/ LED? If that's the case I think it'd be pretty hard to have it switch colors. Wouldn't you have to add a completely different LED pipe for the second color?

That was why I originally thought to just have it flash (if its already on, maybe just have it flash brighter or something...if its off then have it flash on then back off). But if it'd be easy to implement a second color, that'd be pretty cool too.

i just want it to come on when I open the door, go off when I close the door and have a switch to override the "on" when the doors are closed in case I want to impress someone. i'm just a simple guy, i guess....
