Bridge collapse near my home town today.

I used to go across this bridge every day...on I5 which is the main highway going north/south through Washington State.

Update...looks like an oversized truck struck the bridge, leading to the collapse. Not conformed yet, but there are witnesses saying this.

If that is, in fact, the cause, then someone seriously dropped the ball.

All "oversized loads" are required, by law, to submit paperwork to the state department of transportation (or whatever their roadway maintenance and design organization is called) for review to make sure their route can handle whatever they are transporting.

If the truck driver/company didn't submit the paperwork, they are in some serious doo-doo.

If the truck driver/company did submit the paperwork and the DOT approved it, someone at the DOT is in some serious doo-doo.

This simply should not happen.

Can't look at the link right now. Any deaths? This is unacceptable.

No deaths reported...they are pretty sure there are no other cars other than the 3 they saw, and those people have been rescued.

That's the good news out of this. Traffic in this area is going to suck for quite a while, though it is a more rural area.

70,000 cars go over this bridge a day. It is the main route from Seattle to Vancouver BC. Due to the age, I hope they go for full replacement rather than repair. It's over 50 years old.

It's going to be a fun afternoon. I have to go by there today and Tuesday

By AP news the company did have the permits for the truck. Here is the news story.
