Youtube is your friend. I bet there are THOUSANDS of vids on claying. Watch a couple and i'm sure you'll be confident in claying. Adams and Autogeek both have very good videos as well. Since this is your first time, i'd suggest as above and go to walmart of your favorite auto parts store and grab a detailing clay kit. Until recently, all detailing clay was made from one or two places. What that means is, it's all pretty much the same, depending on the grade. Meguairs, Mothers, Turtle, etc, doesn't really matter. One isn't better than the other so get the one that is the best value for what's in the box.

Its easier to ruin your paint just by washing it, then claying. Make sure its lubed, and clay away!

You may want to check your water source. If you have "hard" water, the instilled minerals can lead to spotting. A simple solution would be to use distilled water, maybe $0.75 a gallon from Wally World.

I used to detail cars professionally for shows. My process was as follows:
Prewash rinse of carwash fluid and water.
Rinse
Wash, using a SOFT wash brush
Rinse
Wash using hand mitt and wash fluid
Rinse
Dry using Water Blade and Chamois
Clay if necessary
Polish, hand buff to high shine with buff mitt, Zymoil was my preferred brand,
Wax, usually 2 coats,
Buff BY HAND to HIGH shine

If you aren't sure about purchasing a clay towel (Nanoskin or equivalent) then pick up a Meguiar's or Mothers kit and remember the lube is included for a reason. If you think your hard water is causing water spots then think about using distilled water along with the a rinse less product such as ONR or ONR+W. The Garry Dean rinse less wash method is your friend.
Keep this in mind. Your cars surface is like a mirror. The more contaminants and defects on it will reduce the reflection (shine). Much like a broken mirror. Removing these will increase the shine you desire.

Wax it....its not going to hurt anything. If its still there, take the next step. No sense doing something you are not comfortable with until you try the simplest route.

In need of some help

Last Sunday I had my 2011 Camaro (Black with grey stripes) washed and waxed at my local detail shop. The next day it rained, but nothing out of the ordinary. I live in an apartment and my car is under a car port and I drive it sparingly, so when I went to take it for a drive I noticed what "looks" like water spots on my rear strips. I didn't think anything of it until I washed my car and the "water spots" didn't wash off. It seems like this is a pretty common thing with these vinyl stripes, but I haven't found anything on these forums with definitive on how to remove these stains. I've tried vinegar on a microfiber cloth and some off the shelf Mothers Vinyl clear. My next attempt will be to use Clay Bar, but I wanted to get some forum advice/opinions/help before using a more drastic approach.

Does anybody know how this happened? Is it even fixable or will I have to replace my rear strips?

I bought this car used about 2 months ago and its still under warranty till the end of the month.

Please help...

Your warranty doesn't cover that. And you'll probably need to get them replaced. You can try a very light clay.

Vinyl always ends up costing more than just painting because it's so much less forgiving.

you might get away with also trying duragloss WSR, or chemical guys water spot remover.

i don't think it will hurt the vinyl, but it really doesn't make a difference at this point i guess.

Get the speedy prep sponge and do it right the first time. I just did my car last week with great success with me being a first timer with the claying process.

You just need to be really careful with any clay type product on vinyl.

I think it is impossible to not mar the vinyl not matter how fine the clay or soft the touch.
