California Smog and High Flow Cats
Has anyone installed high flow cats and been able to smog their Camaro? I have a 2010 2SS A6 and would like to upgrade but reluctant due to militant smog regulations. I understand that I have some time before needing to smog but would love to avoid the hassle of uninstalling then re-installing.
Thanks for the input! |

I have JBA high flow cats, Doug thorely cat back, Dynomax mufflers, & a tune. I passed my smog test here in Oceanside, CA. I told the inspector what I had in my car before hand. He said he would do a friendly smog check for free & if it fails then I'd have to go fix the problem and not pay for the smog check. If I pass then I pay and smog check is complete.

Some high flow cats wont pass the sniffer test in CA and are sub-par compared to the factory units.

Passed with JBA hi flow cats on my 97 Trans Am. I'd imagine with a carb number for their shorties, their cats should be good. (no sense making clean headers and selling dirty cats)

Dirty = no CARB Clean = CARB approval Other than trying to maybe get out of tuning an ECM !cats, I don't see much reason to make high flow cats that fail smog. If I don't care about running clean, I'll skip the high cost of cats, throw in sims and/or tune to ignore. If I do care, then I'll keep looking for cats with a high flow capacity that do pass. Hence my statement that if JBA thought it important enough to spend considerable time and money on CARB certs for their Shorties, then they likely spent time making compliant cats. So again, not much sense making legal headers and only illegal cats. The original question is: do their cats pass, so I think it's a valid observation. However I could be wrong. I know in my case, high flow cats passed the sniff test. The only issue was my "nitrous" on the visual. I actuality the "nitrous" was my braided line for the boost gauge...which laughingly went to a plastic vacuum T...hardly the connection associated with several hundred psi.

I think the sniffer test will be a thing of the past. Last I heard, they are going to switch to just OBD testing. They will plug their computer to your OBD port and if all the readiness test are ok then you are good to go.
