Regardless of whether or not the engine has been test fired at its assembly plant, or run in the car at the main assembly plant, they never changed out the oil so the shavings are still in there. I changed mine at 1200 when I put it away for the first winter. If they broke them in, the manual would not spec a break-in procedure.

While I'm certain they don't run break-in miles on the engine at the factory I'd say just follow the break in procedure in the book and be happy.
I've seen break in oil at 1500 miles with ZERO noticeable metal and I've seen some with. (My own and pictures of others.) Mine had nothing to see. But I followed the GM break-in procedure to a 'T'. Like anything else, you'll hear varying opinions and different personal results. |

For those who say, "I never changed my oil till 5K/6K," etc., consider this: Just because there COULD be metal shavings in your oil does not mean there always will be. In your situation, perhaps there was not. Or, perhaps further down the line it will become more noticeable as to why you should have changed early on break-in. With the cost of the car vs. the cost of an oil change being so hugely differential (I mean seriously, and oil change is not that expensive), why would anyone take that chance? I don't mind gambling a little from time to time, but while I might drop some coins into a slot machine for fun and chance, I surely would not drop in 30 grand...

Manual (at least mine) doesn't say a thing about oil during the break-in other than to check the level and add oil if necessary for the first 1500. If you follow the manual, then you would be covered by the warranty if something were to happen?

Any new car or truck that I have ever had has had the oil changed within 1500 miles. Maybe they didn't need it, but then again maybe they did. The oil change on the Camaro is only around 80 bucks which is cheap insurance for your motor. I would go to a different dealer and pay to have it changed.

My dealer won't give me free oil change until 15% oil life. I paid at 40%and then will get my free one at 5%

By 5K miles I'd had two LOF services done. I drive lots so I just change my oil every 90 days and use fully synthetic with a premium filter. By my 1 year birthday buying the car all the fluids will have been changed with the exception of the coolant. Brake fluid upgraded diff service 2X and trans once. To me it's cheap insurance to make sure my premium car gets premium service. I'm also in the Auto Service business so it's easy as I'm at a shop most days every week.
I've always done this with my cars as there is no down side to doing regular servicing or maybe a wee bit more than normal. ;-) Just as a side note. When I did my last track day I was astonished how quickly my oil life percentage got eaten up. Just shows they really do have that computer algorithm tuned into what the car is doing.

they dont tell you to change your rear diff oil at the 1st 500 miles either but take a look at the metalic black gear oil that comes out of it at 500. GM simply doesnt tell you how to break in an vehicle because you could get a ticket and they do not want to tell you you need to spend money on the car in 500 to 1000 miles. The engine should be broke in hard but the gears should be broke in easy so basically drive it like you normally would, change the oil and gear oil between 500 1000 miles then beat the hell out of it.

To me, the break-in procedure that GM wants (4000 RPM limit, etc) would indicate there is indeed some settling the car needs to do. Seems contradictory for GM to then say the fluids don't need changed until way down the road.
Why the contradiction? Because the market dictates they must offer free fluid changes, and that costs money. So, a simple cost-to-benefit analysis would dictate that they will take the risk with the fluids, but not change the stated break-in requirements for the customer. Frankly, if there was evidence that the break-in requirements would cost them market share, you would see that go away too, as it would cost them money. It's all about the calculation for businesses. For me? I will wait until the 1500 mile break-in is done, then change out the oil and the diff. The cost-to-benefit calculation to me makes it worth it, as the cost for not doing it is paranoia |
