It has roll bars in it so it does not crush if it rolls. I think the newer ones are pretty safe.

The newer one's steel is thinner (paper thin) than the older models, but they have air bags in the doors.A Jeep Wrangler's top and doors will not keep you safe, wear your seatbelt and drive at reasonable speed to avoid a roll over.

Love jeeps. Just make sure they know to wave to every other jeep. Trust me, those guys will see you coming from a mile away, and will still throw a wave.

Its my understanding that the roll bars on Wranglers are meant to deform and crush during a rollover, which will absorb a lot of the energy of a roll but will sacrafice itself in the process. Its still safe (unless you plan on doing some serious rock crawling), but they are not at all like a full cage that can take anything thrown at it and just get the paint scratched. Those full cages are usually made from a heavier steel and have lots of triangulation and bracing, making them much much stronger. The bars in the stock Wrangler have next to no lateral support. They look like they could take a vertical load pretty well (which is what the standards are based around) but I don't think they'll have much strength as the Jeep rolls. I'm pretty sure its supposed to do something like this when it rolls:

Thanks for all the inputs guys.
This will be my bro's daily driver. You know, usual 17 year old kid stuff, school, movies, mall, romp in the back seat, occasional winter driving, etc. So my biggest concern (apart from safety) is just how the car feels on the road. Is he going to be comfortable? Will it fulfill a 17 year olds daily driving needs? He really liked the way they look. And he loves the fact that he can hardtop it in the winter and then turn it into a convertible truck in the summer. He's not a big fan of the Sahara but he likes the X and Sport models with the round headlights. (He's talked to me about them quite a bit once he saw this thread). |

He'll definitely love and hate it at times as it is a love/hate relationship. I had a '94 bought brand new and sold about 4 years ago. As many have already said it's dependable and fun. The biggest drawback is the gas. Doesn't matter if it's a 4 cyc. or 8 it's going to suck lots of gas. So get the 8 to back it up with power. Definitely want to buy one with the hard top and have several soft tops. Mine didn't have an ac and the only unit I had was a 2 65 (two windows down and drive 65). If you don't have a hard top you'll wish you did during the winter. Also the plastic windows will crack in the winter if you try to need to fold them down. Lesson learned there. The soft tops will need lots of conditioning as they will dry rot over time. Also the plastic windows will fade if you don't watch it when you take the tops down. The use to recommend you to roll the back window up when you take the top down. Its best to just take if off if you do. I'd definitely get another one someday but I would have to make sure I get all the stuff I want on it.
