My frustrating experience with Discount Tire [Rant]

So, this weekend I went to Discount Tire to get a quote on tires with wheels that I will be ordering (M228 woop! woop!). The wheels, as most know, are 20x10 and 20x11. Since it's an affordable option, and a nice setup, I decided to go with a 285/35R20 square setup. Goodyear Eagle F1s. Basically, the exact same setup as the 1LE Camaro.

The first tech, super cool guy and really nice, was trying to input it into the computer but it kept throwing an override error. It was complaining about the load rating of the tires for the car. The stockies (PZero) are 103Y and 106Y respectively. The F1s are 100Y.

The tech calls the manager over and I explain the setup. His first comment is: "You can't do that. The front will sit square but the rear will be stretched compared to it causing it to be shorter by about half an inch. This creates an unsafe situation and shouldn't be done". I explain that every single 1LE Camaro has this setup from the factory and he tries to tell me that no manufacturer would do that. He then looks it up and says "That doesn't make sense".

Then he switches gears and tries to explain that the 1LE must have different spring rates and be vastly lighter (I believe the 1LE is only ~80 lbs lighter across the entire car). Which yes, that may be slightly true but I fail to see how that would impact the loads that much. I explained that it seemed to me like the system was merely complaining because 100Y was less than the stock 103 and 106, but I could be wrong.

Ultimately they refused to install 285 square setup on 20x10 and 20x11. If they were polite about it, that would be one thing. But the fact that he flat told me I was wrong about a car having that size setup, and then without apologizing went on to say the manufacturer is wrong for doing it, kinda irked me. Afterwards he kept trying to convince me to go with a 285/305 setup (mind you, that would still have a 100Y on the front) in the Pilot Super Sports. I can't help but think he was refusing to do it, to try and upsell me, thinking I would cave : /

I left lol. They refuse to mount it. So I will order them online through Amazon or one of the vendors here and find another shop to to mount/balance

That makes NO SENSE! I just purchased Michelin PSS tires from Discount Tire a few months ago on my 1LE. I even informed the Tech not to get the front wheels mixed up with the back wheels being that they are two different sizes. Go to another store where they know what they are talking about, and if you go to another company they will usually match the price of Discount.

Discount will only do what the computer tells them. When I use them I remove the wheels and take them in to have the tires mounted. They always ask what they are for. I politely tell them it's a project. I even go so far as to remove the center caps so if they are not familiar with the stock rims they have no idea. One guy was so persistent trying to be sneaky asking what they were for I had to finally tell him straight out that I was not going to tell him so quit asking.
As you said you'd be better off going somewhere else.

Pretty common for a shop not wanting the liability. Yes the load ratings on the stock tires could handle a escalade towing a boat. Oem put em on so that's what their computer goes by. I used to have to drop off the wheels without the car and put the wheels and tires on my car in garage before i had a first name basis with who I use to purchase tires.

It's all about liability. Discount tire has really gotten paranoid over the last year about it.

You should be able to have them just order the Rims and tires and have them mounted there. If they don't install them on the car, they don't have the liability any more. That is what they told me when I was looking at ordering Pilot Super Sports from them here in town.

I feel your pain on tire stores being retarded. My local Les Schaub wouldn't mount my new tires because I had got them online and didn't buy them from them.

They kept telling at one time that I could not put 17" rims on my 2LT. So I bought them elsewhere, but they mounted them with no questions.

Imagine that, they're in business to sell tires. Who'd have thought?

My Discount Tire was great. No issues here. Explained to them what I wanted to do. The computer wouldn't let them sell me the wheels and tires.
Guy said "I know what to do."
Put in another vehicle as a 2013 ZL1. Then I could do the wider wheels and tires. No issue.

Next time, just go in and say your vehicle is a 2013 1LE. Shouldn't have any issues then.
