That's a common shape and size for a DIC, and works fine for the purpose. That width is quite readable for that type of info.

I think they did it so that both rectangular guages are within the steering wheel (not blocked by the wheel) when you are driving.

The button on turn signal lever to the left of the steering wheel looks like where we will operate the DIC.
