Non sequential vin 2012 ZL1 For Sale
I was going through some ads for used ZL1's and came across this one. The VIN number is 2G1FS1EP7C 9799763... I thought that all ZL1's had the sequential vin number starting at 9800001. Just wondering if anyone knew why?
http://ingearct.com/VehicleDetails/2...necticut-06824 I just went directly to the maritime chevrolet website and found that they have two identical 2012 ZL1's. Both have a non sequential VIN... pictures look like its the same car but different VIN and mileage. http://www.maritimemotors.com/Vehicl...-CT/1917019273 |

I guess they have to be.
Carfax report shows that they are both from Michigan. Are they more valuable, less valuable? Does that mean that more than 1971 ZL1's were made in 2012 |

If you run the VIN number, it shows it is a 2012 1SS coupe. I would say they just have the wrong VIN listed for the ZL1.

Many of the CTF cars get reconditioned and sold to the public.

Non-Saleable VIN's will have the 'EX' in them at the end. Saleable vehicles will have a FMVSS-compliant VIN. The ZL1's built before, I think it was 1/23/12 (whatever the date the sequential VIN's started), if they were saleable, they would have the "regular" VIN as seen on the vehicles being discussed.
That said, any of those would go through any retrofits, quality tweaks, etc. before going to auction. Some would have been CTF vehicles, some in the press fleet, some auto show vehicles, etc. This was seen as well on the '09 ZR1's, etc., that have sequential style-unique VIN's. However, these early ZL1's should have the LSA engine digit: 8th digit is a 'P'...as seen in the example given. As long as there are no warranty blocks or other issues, I would be no more or no less leary than an used car. May have been driven easy, or not. What you have to look out for is "special use" vehicles. For example, the ZR1's, etc. that are used at Bondurant and Spring Mountain in the race schools come on the auction market frequently. Because they have been officially track cars, the powertrain / driveline parts have warranty blocks on them. You typically see these on eBay, Cars.com, etc. at some "incredible" price for the mileage. I love how the sellers typically put "car has remaining balance of factory warranty". Which won't apply to the engine, trans, rear, brakes, suspension, usually. While not techically a lie, it sure doesn't tell you the whole story. If you are going to modify the snot out of the driveline, those track cars are great buys as your warranty would be toast anyways. I have some buddies that have been very happy with them as they got a great deal on a well-maintained, albeit track car, and were modifying them anyways. If ever in question, if being sold by a GM dealer, have them show you the GMVIS page with warranty status and mileage / date of warranty coverage. If not sold by a GM dealer, I would take the VIN to your local dealer and ask the same. Hope this helps...a bit long-winded, but, I am usually... |
