Active Fuel Managment

I am newbie. I just bought a 2010 Camaro SS Automatic. From what I understand this car has a L99 400 HP engine. It uses something called Active fuel management, which only uses 4 cyclinders under a light load. If there a way to tell when the car is only using 4 cyclinders? I cannot find anything on my car that says there is AFM being used or available.

When it kicks in, you'll hear an excruciating noise that sounds like bees in a coffee can.

Does the car still have the OEM exhaust on it?

1. I have not heard any unusual noises
2. How do I know if it has the OEM exhaust?

1. If you haven't heard the AFM kick in (see BowtieBelle's fart reference), then one of two things are true. It still has the OEM exhaust on it, which includes about 200 pounds worth of mufflers and resonators to mask the AFM; or the AFM has been disabled.

Hopefully, it's the latter.

2. Look under the car. The OEM exhaust consists of two gigantic silver-gray "trash-can" mufflers in the back and a massive copper-colored resonator in the tunnel.

You have probably deduced that I'm not a proponent of AFM. It doesn't really save gas (unless you're driving on perfectly flat straightaways) and it's extremely annoying. Although some here disagree, I and many others think it has no place on a muscle car.

I disabled mine the second day I had the car.

EDIT: The orange stripes on the white Camaro look great. Nice choice.

Don't worry about it. The car does not let you know AFM kicked in. Most people report they can hear it if they listen carefully while driving. The sound of the car just changes and the sound is very disagreeable. If you have a stock exhaust system it will be a little harder to hear because the stock system is very muffling. Once you modify your exhaust it becomes more evident when AFM kicks in. AFM can be tuned out so it no longer kicks in but I believe this will void your warranty. I think driving in sport mode (using the paddle shifters) allows you to avoid AFM. This way won't void the warranty.

OMG finally someone else who describes the sound that I hear when mine kicks in. I posted that mine sounded like the car was farting in another AFM related post and I got for describing the sound as a fart.

Its good to know that I am not crazy.... well I might be crazy just not about the fart noise....lol
