Beefing up the rear end

So I'm thinking about getting the Detroit Truetrac diff but I've got a few questions that hopefully someone can answer for me. Just a quick background of what I've done and what I'm planning to do still. Right now my car is cammed with headers and exhaust, about 450rwhp. I planning on adding a Maggie and meth kit, want to be around 675-700rwhp when I'm done. With that in mind should I go with 3.73 gears or 3.45. I don't want get 3.91s beacause that would just be too much. I also have a DSS aluminum driveshaft on the way, that will still bolt right up to the new diff right? I will also be upgrading to DSS 1000hp axels too, I think they should fit too, but just want someone to confirm that for me. Thanks.

I ran a TruTrac with the stock 3.45 gears making 811whp, but that was with a centri. At that time and even still, I was using 1000hp axles. I've since upgraded the center section to the Dana60 rear, running 3.73 gears with the same axles. To say the axles will hold up is hard to say, because myself and one other person were using that exact same setup with the rear, and he broke his 1000hp axles running a Maggie. It's hard to say what would be better as far as gears. Although the ZL1 uses 3.73, power to the rear may be slightly different. The 3.45 should be good, to last you for a while. If I had a choice though, I would go 3.73. The Trutrac is a great posi unit so it'll help you grip using both wheels better.

Yes as long as you don't change from the Stock rear housing (9"/12bolt or Dana60) all will fit correctly.

I'm not planning on drag racing or beating on it too often, it's more peace of mind i guess, but thanks for the help

Why wouldn't you recommend 3.73s?

That's what I thought, thanks.

You wouldn't put gear in a diesel would you? The Maggie likes to pull, that's it's advantage so use it.The more tq you have the less gear you need...

Question is what do you want your speed to look like? Imagine going down the track, do you want better 60ft, 1/4 or 1/8 times? Are you going auto cross type quickness?

By the time you add up all the axles, posi, gears, labor, etc you might as well just buy the GM ZL1 rear end kit.

^ Second that. I invested almost $5k into my drivetrain to have it beefed up and my diff was built incorrectly and it obliterated itself. $2700 down the drain just in diff parts. I still run the 1-pc driveshaft and 1000hp axles, but think Im going to sell them since I just ended up buying a brand new 1LE diff. Spend the money once and do it right unless you have a differential shop that you trust 200%. I would just get the ZL1 assembly and call it good. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I would say if you frequent the zl1 section you will see that the zl1 setup diffently has it share of issue's. I do agree on doing it right the first time and would recommend our 9 inch.

I would say you always talk down about anything and everything you don't personally sell and profit from.

Run 3.91s and a centri blower. The cam you have now may not be a real good match for a PD blower but more than likely will work fine with a centri.
