Right now, the only "iPods" I have is a 4th gen iPod and my first gen iPhone. The 4th gen iPod won't play the music...but it does charge in the USB port. The iPhone works flawlessly. My problem is that I like to keep my phone on me and I don't want to have to keep unplugging it and plugging it back in whenever I get in the car.

So, I went out and bought an 8GB Flash drive today. Before I open it...I want to make sure it's going to work. (If it's not, I'm just going to buy an iPod Nano and call it a day).
iTunes music isn't in mp3 format. Is it still a simple "drag and drop" application to allow it to be read on a flash drive or do I have to convert them into mp3 prior to putting them on the drive?
you can use the audio jack under the usb jack and play any file type but I dont think the car can control it then

I can't imagine most people having a collection of more than 2500 songs that they actually like, I spent months compiling a collection of like 44 artists I liked a lot, and about 50 others that I liked only a couple songs each (less than 5). Then I added in a few gigs of my gf's music to make her happy, and I'm still no where near 2500 songs. Maybe I'm just picky I don't know, but right now it's a non-issue.

I've put 1k miles on the beast and have only listened to about 20% of what I've put on there, and that's with constant skipping of songs I'm not in the mood for.

There are about 100 free programs online that you can use to convert music files from *AAC to *MP3 or whatever you want. ImTOO audio encoder is the one I use. Don't pay Steve Jobs and Cr-Apple for anything except their music player.
I honestly cannot believe people are still paying for music downloads and on top of that paying to have them converted to be used by anything other than iTunes.

They certainly do have the superior prices. They are the superior company when it comes to mp3 players, I'll give them that.
Sorry I offended you with my opinion on a company.

Now let's get back to helping this guy out on his USB drive.

I plan on using my 16GB, I'll have to see how bad the problems are, more than likely if the folders and files are indexed properly on the drive, that will solve most of the problems. I'd rather leave a $40 flash drive in the heat than a $250 iPod. If I ever get mine, I'll let you guys know what I figure out so you can protect your iPod screens from the heat.

Depending on where you live it should be fine to leave it in your car.

Environmental requirements
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)
