Opinions on how much brakes I have left
Hello everyone -
I am not an expert in this stuff and would appreciate your opinions on this. I own a 2010 SS/RS with around 35k miles (barely drive it here in SF). I wanted to get your opinions on how much brakes I have left. I am posting two images, the first is the front and the second is the rear. I am scheduled to go in to get my pads replaced with OEM parts a week from today, next Thursday which will include surfacing my rotors. Do you guys think I have a week left of normal freeway driving brakes in them? Thank you! |

They will squeak but you should be okay.

You'll be fine. If they start squeaking, you can always bend the tab back so it doesn't mark up your rotor. They may be able to resurface and reuse the rotors that way.

If you're down to your wear indicators, I'd replace the pads right away.

Thanks everyone! I ordered the OEM pads from Amazon/GMPartsDirect along with the caliper bolts. Should be all done by next Thursday!
I appreciate you guys' responses on this. |

You'll be fine until next week, but you're definitely getting down there.

If you do not cut or replace the rotors there is no need for the bolts.

I wouldn't have the rotors cut/resurfaced, unless they're warped. You only reduce their serviceable life doing that and it's not needed. Also, like said above, you won't need caliper bolts then. The brakes pads can be replaced without removing the caliper.

If they really are warped, you might as well just replace them. If they're down close to the "minimum to machine to" thickness, replace them.
Is there indication of how much the rotors have already worn, such as at the outermost or innermost edges of the portion swept by the pads? Can you measure the thickness inside the area swept by the pads? I'd cut rotors that have scoring that you can catch a fingernail on, just to make sure that the rotor surface starts out flat again (like the friction surfaces of the new pads will be). This assumes that the scoring can be removed without having to go all the way to the "min to machine" thickness. Norm |

I don't think the rotors are warped just by the break pedal feel of the car. There is no vibration, in fact the braking is fairly smooth considering the pads are almost worn out.
However almost every guide that I have read advises to re-surface the rotors by a small amount to get the most out of your new pads. Again I am not an expert at this, but would appreciate your opinions on this. Thanks! |

If you don't have any pulsating while braking, I wouldn't resurface the rotors.
Maybe take some sandpaper to the rotors to buff them up a bit, then MAKE SURE TO BED IN THE PADS PROPERLY. 40mph BRAKE HARD to 5mph. It's important to NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP DURING THIS! Right away back up to 40, then down to 5, then again. Then take the speed up to 55 and down to 5 three times. Then drive nicely - as little braking as safely possible for about 15 minutes at highway speeds to let everything cool.
