Help needed!!

My grandson is going to school in Bloomington/Normal, IL. He called me last evening, says his car is overheating. He knows very little about cars. He has a 2013 Ford Focus 4cyl. auto.
I had him check the usual things over the phone.

He says;
Belt is there
overflow tank is empty
no fluid on the ground
motor starts and runs good
He did not know whether the fans were running or if they ever had run??
Not looking for any diagnostics here just mentioning this so you know what I/he is up too.

Anyway, hoping someone local to the area, could tell me a good shop for him to take it to that is trustworthy.
Thanks in advance

Overflow tank should not be empty. fill to the cold line until it stays there. Good luck

I would check radiator while engine is cold and then makes sure it is full and fill overflow to correct level. Start car and let run for 10 min of so and watch temp guage. Let sit to cool and check for leaks around all hoses and connections, overflow tank, and radiator. FYI - overflow tanks can get small cracks that open when hot and close when cold so check for moisture on sides and bottom. Then I would check temp \\\\thermostat as someone else indicatd,
If he is ever driving it and it gets hot set heater temp to hot and turn on fan to high. Helps disipate heat.

What is the oil level at? Is there milky grey sludge when you look in the fill cap? That coolant has to be going somewhere.

The OP is looking for someplace for his son to take his car to, since nobody chimed in I would suggest having him find a traditional parts store like a NAPA or Car Quest and ask them for a recommendation for a competent and honest shop. They deal with them daily and know who is good and who to stay away from.

Yes, he's looking for somewhere to take it, but there's no good reason he can't add coolant in the meantime.
