That new 500 is pretty damn stout. If only the tires were better. I wouldn't buy one... but it's fast!

Stuff like this drives me nuts. Is the Camaro a great deal? Yeah. In the hands of Joe average are you going to notice a huge difference in performance between a GT500 and a Camaro SS? Probably not. Can a Camaro get anywhere near a 12.2 second 1/4 mile bone stock? No, but the GT500 can given a good driver and decent conditions. Make no mistake, if you have the ability to extract maximum performance from the car the GT500 is genuinely stupid fast. Does that somehow make the Camaro SS a loser? Of course not. DOes the fact that Joe average is never going to be able to tell the diffrence between these two cars make the GT500 a loser? Of course not.

Both cars have a lot to offer. And, depending upon what you want out of your car, your personal abilities, and the size of your wallet, each makes a compelling argument for itself.

The SS is better regardless of who is driving or how much money you have.

huh? All I am saying is the for the price the Camaro wins... I have a mustang so I am not a ford hater, but these cars really shouldn't be compared since the gt500 has way more hp and costs a lot more

we need a gt500 and z28 comparison if the SS gets that close in a race... I would love to see how a z28 would do

interesting very interesting. the lighter more powerfull gt500 only beat the heavier less powerfull camaro by 2 car lenghts. this is great for the camaro ss. we know know with simple bolt ons its in gt500 territory while still n/a.
now i want to see how they put up against each other on the twisties. i think the more powerful gt500 with a live rear axle will be less of a threat.

But I'd rather spend $33K for 426HP and get beat by 1/10th second than $50K with 540HP.
Slap a Procharger on that SS.......OMG! 191HP more for $6,896, now that's a deal.

Where you going little blue oval.......lets have a re-match!!!

That is the ticket, for $6-8K...STILL $10K Less than the Gt500, you would have no issue beating it. Wow 500+ Horses, supercharger, and lighter...and still only .1 seconds faster. That goes to show the diminishing horsepower return over a certain higher power ratio!

No offense man, but every time this same discussion comes up someone quotes this exact track test were the GT500 trapped 118 (Most tests suggest a trap of 114-115)...you realize what you say within your own quote..."traction limited by low ambient temps" ie cold weather, the kind of weather that makes more hp...we have yet really to see alot of tests of broken in SS's in cold weather to see what ET/mph's they will trap. You saw in the video what it traps compared to the camaro in hot weather...4mph difference...when the mustang GT was tested vs the camaro on same days the trap difference was greater...104-111...ie 7mph yet the quoted power differences like 114 hp (approx) is the same between the cars...

don't get me wrong, I like the GT500...I just am a chevy guy...Mustang guys begged for this comparison, and they got it, but they didn't get the blow out they wanted, the GT500 was a clear winner on paper but just like a talented superstar, in this comparison, it just didn't produce results up to its potential. Sure with DR and a prepared surface the margin would have been greater, but most encounters (lets be honest) wont' happen that way, so understand from stop light to stop light, it will likely be a drivers race. A roll race is game over....BUT a lightly modded (headers, exhaust, CAI, tune) camaro SS vs a stock GT500....man that would be a nice race.

Actually it says that the SS is lighter but not by much.
Curb weight (dist f/r) SS 3888 lb (58/42%) ---- GT500 3903 lb (58/42%)
