In May 2009, I was shopping and standing over a new 2008 and 2009 GT500, dealer was going to let me have either for $39k (MSRP was $47k). I loved everything about it, (even the solid axle which I didn't/still don't mind as I am not someone to whom a 3 second difference in road course time will really matter) was about ready to sit down when I decided to just go ahead and order the 2010 Camaro (I owned 5 3rd gens). Well, wasn't long after the Camaro arrived that I longed for the GT500 power so Maggie was installed. Still, it just wasn't the same. A supercharged car coming from the factory feel more solidly put together than a car who wasn't born with one. Yes, you can make a post-delivery supercharged car feel solid with additional $$$ on suspension but it just isn't the same to me. I am so glad today that I didn't buy either the 2008 or 2009 GT500 back then. The 2011 GT500 now has an aluminum block and SVT Performance Package and many other improvements that weren't available in 2010 and back. I am totally enjoying it. It really isn't fair to compare the Camaro SS to a GT500. They are two different animals. The Camaro HP edition will be a better comparison. I wonder how much above 550hp the HP will have to get it done. The stock SS is already 3800+ pounds...add a supercharger and it will be around 4000 lbs while the newest GT500 is tad over 3700 lbs. I bet the HP will be lighter and has over 550hp. It is going to be goooooooooood. Last edited by ffrcobra_65; 02-07-2011 at 02:15 PM. |

The only reason why I was comparing the two was because they were both around 39,000 almost the exam same price. I was comparing a used 2010 gt500 with 7,000 miles compared to a new 2011 2SS/RS. The 2011 GT500 is a different story, and it was out of my price range.
One question I had Quote:

yes, you can use meguires haze and swirl remover and lots of elbow grease, then coat with wax. Or you can invest in a Porter Cable 7424 and get rid of them safely in no time. Having a PC to polish and wax your car is addicting, once you see the result, because you always want it looking freshly detailed all the time.

If you are from Texas I'm sure your familiar with Texas Direct Auto, that's where the shelby was. It was on ebay for that price, and it had navigation and SYNC which a lot of shelby's don't have, it was a very hard decision for me to make. I actually sat down to buy the shelby with the finance guy at there dealership, and someone put a deposit down online 6 minutes before I did. I had been looking at the camaro for so long and I'm a die hard chevy fan that I pretty much figured I would regret owning the Shelby and I would have ended up in a ditch somewhere, also this is my daily driver and I was worried about long term the maintenance on a car with a supercharger. Plus I'm too young to own a Shelby! The average person that buys a shelby is somewhere around 48 and they usually have it has a garage car. Driving everyday though I felt like the camaro was a more wise choice even though on motor trend's review of the two cars showed they were only a 1/10th of a second apart 12.8 compared too camaro at 12.9.
Bottom of the line in my opinion the Shelby is an awesome garage car, the camaro is an awesome daily driver. I like to have my heated seats and no wheel hop! However, I would have been happy with either one, I love all American muscle and have respect for a shelby an ss and even the srt8. They all have pros and cons, the biggest issue for me was trying to decide! On a side note, this is a camaro website and long live the bowtie! It's all smiles driving my baby around! |
