Late to the party... I know.
I love manuals and currently own two cars with them. And you can be fast with a manual... just not fast enough. In racing, I am losing to people who I used to beat. What changed. They got automatics. While I am at the rev limit just before a turn not wanting to upshift just to downshift immediately, they are in the perfect gear. I can shift as fast as I can, but their car shifted faster and gained a door length. I am often not in the sweet spot of my power band. They are. I truly love manuals... I really do, but then I see Carlos getting into 4th with the A10 ZL1 this week on a small figure 8. I and you just couldn't do that and be fast and smooth. Last time I voted on this issue with my money and ordered a 6 speed. This time I just voted with my money and ordered the A10.

Well I'm a 31 y/o dinosaur and absolutely refuse to buy a car in this class in automatic. It's M6 all the way for me and yes I realize the A10 is faster. If I want convenient and luxury I'd buy a Bmw or Lexus. For a car like this it's manual all the way. When in Mexico doing rolls, I'll take a manual anyday over auto.

Talk about dinosaurs, I'm 67. I test drove both a manual and auto 2SS, and came to this conclusion considering that I've moved from being a street racer back in the 60s to a road course guy as I aged. Given that, I felt the A8 fit better with a 2SS, but for me the M6 in the 1LE made sense for my interests. Now, if the A10 had been available in the 1LE, I would have gone for that over the manual, as I know there is no way I could be as proficient shifting on a road course compared to what that A10 can do.
That said, I would really like to see these cars have an option for a dual clutch auto setup. I believe that C7R has one of those, but unfortunately that transmission probably costs $40K alone. |

If you want to be faster, get the auto. If you want to have more fun, get the manual.
Eventually people will be able to just program their routes on a track and won't have to touch the steering wheel. And they'll buy it because it'll be faster.

I'm thinking about getting an old 4-speed muscle car again to have fun while being slow. As for modern performance cars, it's not fun being consistently slower than automatics at timed events.

I kind of wish all of this technology was not allowed in racing as well. That soft squishy lump in the drivers seat is absolutely the limiting factor today. The cars are amazing now. It would be nice to get back to some of the old day series racing where everyone had the exact same low tech vehicles.
Also, with a manual, a well executed heal toe downshift is a thing of beauty. Oh wait, even the Manual 6 will do that for you with rev matching. Oh the manual has stability control as well, traction control, variable magnetic ride suspension, high tech LSD, etc... It looks like we would all have to be racing 1969 series cars to get away from all of the go fast, be safe technology that even the basic Camaros' have today. All these technologies also take away driver involvement. Ever drive an old 1970 with hardly any brakes and all that body roll fast? That is involvement. As to no skill needed to drive a modern A10... "just push the gas pedal", that is a bit misguided and I am sure said to spur conversation. Pretty much every week, there is someone who stuffs their high tech car into the Armco. Driving at 9/10th or 10/10th's is anything but easy. Throw different drivers in the mix, different closing speeds, variations in track grip, the radiator fluid that the bozo in front of you just squirted all over the track with his or her non maintained car... off camber turns, etc,, etc.. It is a lot more involved than initially meets the eye for either a manual or Auto. Based on the above initial statement, it should be easy to be an Astronaut. All you have to do is sit in a chair.
