4th Gen Miles Question

I was recently involved in a wreck and in the process i rolled my truck and will be soon looking for a replacement, I'm looking for a 4th gen preferably 98-02 model years V6 and a 5-speed and i was just wondering. whats too many miles? i know some people say 100,000 miles is just breaking it in but i'm not too sure that seems like a lot to me

also does anyone know the gas mileage on a V6 w/ a 5-speed?

They're somewhat rare; I think lots of people are keeping them who will sell once the 5th gen comes out. I'd take whatever you can find (even with lots of miles on it) unless you have money to waste on someone who wants too much for it.

When I was thinking about getting one, I looked around and people commonly report 27mpg for the 3.8. If it's the older 4thgen with the 3.4, I'm not sure. That 3.8 is pretty efficient, a decent piece of technology.

I know I'd get 35mpg, but I'm crazy.

the 5spd V6 Camaros were pretty rare... there are alot of people with the '97 models that I've heard getting 30mpg on the highway... haven't really heard anything like that about the newer ones... they all seem to get about the same as the LS1 Z28s/Formulas... I honestly would never consider a V6 in a 4th gen because the LS1 is just so darn efficient... 28-30mpg on the highway and 300+rwhp on tap at a moment's notice... but that's just me.

if you figure what used to be the regular lease terms was 12,500miles per year... and multiply that by 6 (since that's how long its been since the 4th gen V6s were produced), then you get 75,000 miles... so 75k to 100k is about right for a 98-02 Camaro/Firebird... they really do last quite well if you take good care of them and if you can find a 1 owner car, then you'll be set to go with a car that was probably pretty well maintained... or, at the very least, you know the history of.

i honestly would love nothing more than to have a LS1, its my dream car (besides the 5th gen of course) but being that i am 16 and on my parents insurance a V8 coupe after having two points on your insurance from a wreck just isnt possible for me right now but i am a pretty good football player and my dad said if i get a scholarship then he'll take me to the dealership and order me a 5th gen. haha hows that for some motivation?

You can find many many many right around 100,000 miles and if you take care of the car then you can get a lot more out of the 3.8. It's a good motor. Check out autotrader, craigslist.org, carmax, etc. I'm sure if you're patient you'll find a very good car. Do you have an amount you've planned to spend? Just in my area on craigslist there are half a dozen 98-02 camaro's for right around 5,000 dollars and all under 110,000 miles. Good luck with your search.

My 3.8L was great and got close to 30 miles a gallon...and thats with 150K+ miles on it. Seriously the only reason I sold it is because I wanted a V8! If you can find one with less tha 100K great but dont pay more than 5K for 100K+
7-8K for 50-100K miles. I can tell you from experience that the 3.8L is good for 250K+ miles. I wish you were here, my traded in V6 started at 7500, and now its at 3800 which is a steal for that car with everything Ive done to it. heck if they drop it any lower I might buy it back!

I have a V6 and I find that at around 63 mph i get fantastic gas mileage. from PDX to Bend is about 150 or so miles and at 63 steady minus passing, i only used a quarter tank. and mines only got 58k on it. My '77 has a 350 V8 so I got the HP covered until I can get my 383 kit installed. and then its the '10 Z28 or SS for my super fun V8

Most people say a car should get 10-12,000 miles a year. I have heard people say that if you keep up with maintenance a car should run in to 250-300,000 miles.

cant believe i missed this thread.... god i hope you didnt pay 8.5k for a v-6.

seriously, you can get an LS1 for cheaper than that. the miles dont mean squat. one thing to keep in mind, is that the lower the miles, the longer the car has sat without being driven. and more often than not, the less the oil was changed. regardless of the miles, the oil in cars needs to be changed every 3-4 months or 3k miles. whichever happens first. if you want, ive got a few friends selling cars here in SC that i can hook you up with. if you havent wasted the money on that car.

i put about 20,000 on my LT1 each year. she's at just over 180k on the clock. only major thing motorwise was a blown head gasket, but that was my fault cus i hooked up the steam pipe to the wrong fitting on the radiator.

but yes, with proper maintenance, ANY motor should last.
