Are our Alarm Systems Any good?

Are our alarm/Security systems any good? Do we need to upgrade them. Has anyone done a review/test on them?

The only worthwhile anti-theft system is comprehensive coverage with a low deductible through a non-shady insurance company.

I think one of the best theft deterrents is some type of hidden kill switch. Turn off the fuel, ignition, starter or all of the above. Sure, it won't stop a rollback tow truck or a determined professional but it will frustrate the joy ridding screwdriver punks and maybe they'll go bother someone else.

And frustrate them so they shank their screwdriver through the most expensive electronic component in your car.

I have a cellular kill switch in my 99 Z28 that I've hidden pretty well. Its on my cellphone plan and all I have to do is text 'Stop!' to the number and it will kill power going to the fuel pump ultimately disabling the vehicle, even if its in motion.

I know some people will laugh and scoff at this....Most thieves now are coming with signal boosters/code readers and are just driving away with newer vehicles.

#1 Use a club.....most of these high tech thieves are coming with electronic equipment, not a hacksaw or lock picker anymore. Always install your club with the lock facing inwards towards the dash...much more difficult to pick/break (unless they cut the steering wheel)

#2 Use a Faraday pouch/box, prevent signal boosting to begin with.

None of this stops a flatbed, but if you make it difficult enough they may go somewhere else...

I was at Great Wolf Lodge a few weeks ago in Niagara falls and when I was leaving I must have saw 5 cars/minivans with clubs on....I felt like I was back in the early 90s when they were much more popular....

Absolutely agree with this recommendation - have family in law enforcement that recommend them as well. Yes, it kills some of the convenience the new fobs give us, but I'd rather deal with that than the inconvenience of a stolen car.

A couple of additional thoughts - pick a box over a pouch if possible, the flex in the pouch over time will lead to cracks/gaps in the mesh that actually blocks the signal. And buy from someone you can easily return it to, then test it as soon as you get it. Small manufacturing flaws can allow gaps for the signal to get through. In researching them recently, it seems like some manufacturer keys have more problems than others depending on the construction of the box.

I didn't think about that. I guess it's better if they take your car with any valuables you have inside and leave you stranded somewhere. Besides, in my case (my old truck) they destroyed the steering column and probably figured THEY caused the no-start situation. Most times if they don't get what they want in a short amount of time they move on to their next "candidate".
And the Club? They cut my steering wheel with bolt cutters and just removed it.

I’ve seen some Camaro owners add a shock sensor to the current alarm system. Also somebody mentioned a steering wheel club but I think a clutch or brake club is even better.
