Camshafts and springs

Question. I want to go after market cam. I'm looking at stage one cams. The mildest ones they sell. Would I need to go with aftermarket springs and pushrods with a stage one cam or could I stay with the stock ones? Thanks for the help.

Yes, you will need to change springs and pushrods for anything more aggressive than stock. I think the only cam you can get away with not changing anything is the LS9 cam, but gains are minimal for the amount of work involved. Do you have a power goal in mind, or are you just camming for the sound? I would call Texas Speed, Lethal Racing, or Ted at Jannetty and have one custom specd. That way you can have the sound, and stock driveability.

I want both. I love the sound and looking for around 430 rwhp. I want to do the work myself. But I was unsure of the work involved if I needed to do the springs and rods or not. What cam do you have in yours?

You can almost do 430whp without a cam! Lol! I have the Night Fury in mine. Its fairly aggressive and in my opinion is not daily driver friendly. (Which my car is not) Driveability is all in the eye of the beholder. A lot of people are ok driving that cam daily. Cammed cars buck in the lower rpms, (Usually 1800 and below) It makes driving through neighborhoods, parking lots, and rush hour traffic a real pain in the ass. My opinion is to find someone in your area that has a cam, and ask them to take you for a ride see you can see the positives and negatives of having a cammed car. A good cam for you might be the GM hot cam since youre not looking for ridiculous power. http://www.texas-speed.com/p-2796-gm...5-112-lsa.aspx
That will prolly drive the best and produce the sound youre looking for. Doing a cam yourself is very rewarding. Its always better to say "I built" instead of "I bought!"

Like the other guy said 430 can almost be had with out a cam. If your going to spend the money doing a cam do it right and do it once. Upgrade everything you can and talk to a shop listed above. I went with JRE aka Jannety Racing for my cam and advice.

Is that cam you showed me there in the link, it says an ls1 cam? Are they universal between the ls engines?

All LS cams are interchangeable. My cam says LS1 also

I'd call either lethal racing or vengeance racing, both have excellent customer service and would be happy to talk to you about what your goals are and the best way to get there. I went with the Vengeance Racing Kaotik can which is very aggressive and did the install myself as well.

Ya, every cam you buy, unless its for VVT, will say LS1. There is no physical difference between any of the LS engines except bore and stroke, so the cam will physically fit every 3rd and 4th gen engine. LS1 is just the designation cam grinders use.

As far as your goals, do a search on here for who wished they went with a smaller cam.

I'll be nice this once. We have a GAZILLION threads about CAI's, exhausts, and warranty questions. We have exactly ZERO threads about wishing they had used smaller cam.

If you want mild and some sound you can run the GM hot cam. It works with stock springs. Its the cam that gmpp puts in the 480hp LS3 crate engine. Now, granted any other aftermarket cam will out do it.

Sure, yes. I know there are slight differences between the blocks: oil passages, DOD, AFM, oil squirters, yaddy yadda, but I was giving a simplified answer to someone thats new to the LS engines. Didnt think its worth mentioning small differences in the block when they have no idea what Im talking about. Architecturally, they are all the same. Some just have more provisions than others.

Nobody put the hours in on the dyno even close to what we do testing a product before it becomes available.
