tire width

Im trying to find out what size tires should be one buy if front and rear wheels have different widths???

lets use 20x8.5 and 20x10

any help?

Well the easiest way I found is to go to tirerack.com and select wheel and tire packages and select the size rim you have and it will give you a recommended tire size. 20x8.5 would use a 245/35/20 and 20x10 would use a 265/30/20. First # being width of tire, second # being height of tire, and third # being wheel size.

lol... you want to maximize your width greater than that... you want the smallest possible rim witdh witht the greatest possibly tire width...for lightness... i had a 265 35 19 that was 8.5 and on a 9.5 19 i had 305 35 19
the wheels were WIDE and only 9.5 on the rear they were light... i would NEVER go bigger then 265 on the front... it completly changes the car's handlling and gives you more understeer... 245 is even a big front...
with a 20 8.5 you can use 265 35 20
and a 20 10 you can go as high as 325 35 20 but thats a tough size
to find your better off going 20 by 9.5 it gives you 265-305 30-35 20

i would go wider than a 265 on the 10". and why are you telling him to put a smaller profile tire on the rear for the same size rim? lol



if anything go 265/35/20 and 285/35/20


these are for a car that is. if you switch to a truck or something, upgrade the side wall dimension

appreciate it a buddy of mine asked me this question cause Im a wannabe grease monkey...but tire sizes I usually do the tirerack thing also. But like spike I didnt agree with the tire sizes that they recommended

well, it all depends on what you want.

for example, the 4th gen camaros and their 16" salad shooters with 245/55/16s. HUUUGE side wall height mixed with a thin width. now compare that to say...the corvette, with 17" wheels up front and 18s in the back with wide, low-pro tires for maximum grip.

you throw in a larger wheel like we will more than likely be getting with the new camaro. at least an 18" i would imagine, and your tires get smaller on the sides.

my Z06 rims on my Z are wrapped with 275/35/17s and 295/30/18s
i increased the sidewall height on the fronts to balance out the car a little more front to back. also my wheels are 8.5" and 11" wide respectively. i would have gone with 315s on the rear or even 305s, but i got one hell of a deal on the 295s so i took it. plus i dont drag race on those wheels, thats what the ET streets are for. lol

The best look I've found, with my car, has been 275/10/17s on the front (17 X 9) and 335/35/17s (17 X 10.5) in the rear. The rear sidewall stuck out a little more than I would've usually likey, however, it offered some curb protection and I think it helped fill the haunches out a little more. It didn't require any more work than 315s did and I'm hoping GM will give is some room to work with...

Actually the second number (aspect ratio) is a percentage of the first number (width in mm from sidewall to sidewall)

In the first tire the width is 265 mm and hight of the sidewall is 35% of that which is 92.75mm
If you have a wider tire, the second number doesn't have to be as big to equal the same height of the sidewall.

I was wondering why different sizes are being offered on the V6 and V8 models- V6 only offers 8.5" width while V8 offers 9.5"width in the rear tires. If I bought the V6 would it still be possible to buy thicker tires for the rear? I saw some nice ones on a new BMW maybe 9.5"-10" not sure. Really thought that thick rear tires would look nice on my 2lt.
