2010 Camaro vs "The Competition"

Just for fun I'd thought I'd see how the new Camaro stacks up against it's competitors. All pulled from Edmunds.com. Mainly these specs are what will matter in straight line performance (i.e. stoplight to stoplight...i.e. real world). Know your enemy.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro Specs
Style: 2SS 2dr Coupe (6.2L 8cyl 6M)
MSRP: $33,430
Curb Weight: 3860 lbs
Horsepower: 422 hp

Lbs per HP: 9.15
$ per HP: $79.22

2009 Dodge Challenger Specs
Style: SRT8 2dr Coupe (6.1L 8cyl 5A)
MSRP: $39,320
Curb Weight: 4140 lbs
Horsepower: 425 hp

Lbs per HP: 9.74
$ per HP: $92.52

2009 Ford Shelby GT500 Specs
Style: 2dr Coupe (5.4L 8cyl S/C 6M)
MSRP:$42,685
Curb Weight: 3920 lbs
Horsepower: 500 hp

Lbs per HP: 7.84
$ per HP: $85.37

OK I admit there are no specs for this next one, but I'm betting it will be very close to this. It will be there on the streets alongside our Camaros so I thought it should be taken into consideration.

2010 Nissan 370z Specs (Estimated..based on 2008 G37)
Style: Sport 2dr Coupe (3.7L 6cyl 6M)
MSRP:$36,000
Curb Weight: 3600 lbs (70 lbs lighter than G37?)
Horsepower: 340 hp (10 more than G37?)

Lbs per HP: 10.59
$ per HP: $105.88

I know some will say I should be using the Mustang GT and not the GT500, but I'm betting the Mustang GT is going to get a run from it's money from the V6 Camaro so let's be fair.

Any others I should be including?

I think the Mustang GT should be on this list. Even though it's only at 300hp, it is claimed to have a 4.9 second 0-60 which inline with the rest of the cars listed here (which fall in the 4.x second range).

The Camaro spanks the Mustang though, just FYI

You know...it's weird. The current Mustang GT is just not that fast to me. My very good friend bought one at the same time I bought my SRT-4 a couple years ago. We raced multiple times and were basically neck and neck each time. Eventually he put electric fan, underdrive pulleys, intake and remapped ECU and he was beating me, but it still never blew me away.

He now has a Jaguar XK-R that has 420 hp and although that beast is very fast you can really feel it's weight. I'm hoping the Camaro doesn't feel so "bloated".

Sorry but those numbers make no sense to me...

Using power to weight ratio-- P/W

As expected the GT 500 comes out on top... but add in the prices listed above, and I think there is a good example of value and performance.

GT 500: power to weight ratio (horsepower:pounds) = 0.127551020408

Camaro SS: power to weight ratio (horsepower:pounds) = 0.10932642487

Challenger: power to weight ratio (horsepower:pounds) = 0.102657004831

370 Z: power to weight ratio (horsepower:pounds) = 0.0944444444444

09 GT: power to weight ratio (horsepower:pounds) = 0.0893921334923

G37 isn't a good baseline for the Z. As I stated in another thread I am no expert on Z car issues, but since the first plans for the 370Z were revealed part of the formula was a smaller car that weighs a lot less than the outgoing model....and the new Z is a LOT smaller. Most folks are estimating somewhere around 3100lb and change.

In terms of acceleration the 2010 Mustang GT will probably compare to the 2010 Camaro SS on about the same level the 2005 Mustang GT compared to the 2005 Pontiac GTO. No question the Camaro will win. However, a V6 Camaro wont stand a chance. The Chevy gives up too much in the way of torque, will give up more than a little in terms of hp (think around 25-30hp difference) and is at a bit of a weight disadvantage.

Given the fact that the current Mustang GT, in manual trans trim, can knock down a 1/4 mile in the 13.5-13.6 range under ideal conditions with a good driver I would say the 2010 should be good for a tenth or two better than that. I would say look for best efforts in the 13.3-13.4 second range.
The V6 Camaro will be a respectable performer, but in stock trim it wont get particularly close to the current gen cars and will be just a bit further back than that compared to the 2010 GT.

The Camaro SS stock 1/4 times will be under 13 seconds for sure - my 98 SS stock almost ran under 13 seconds and that was 100hp less. The GT won't be close....

The Camaro has ZERO competition in my opinion.
The Mustang, Challenger, and Nissan get destroyed by the new Camaro.

My only complaint is the 4th gen had a similar power-to-weight ratio to that 4th gen Corvette and the 5th gen Camaro does not come close the the current Corvette.

Corvette picked up a couple of tenths in the transformation from the LS2 to the LS3. The transition from LS2-powered GTO to LS3-powered Camaro SS should be relatively similar but for some weight gain on the part of the Camaro. With a good driver on an ideal day I would think the Camaro SS to be a ~12.8-~12.9 second car.

What is also an interesting relationship is the ratio of dollars per hp. The camaro destroys the competition in that field.

For the 2010MY the Camaro is without question going to be the cheapest 400hp coupe you can buy. In terms of performance for dollar I think the new 370Z will be pretty close since it will be 330+hp and has gone on a pretty serious diet. (should come in noticeably lighter than the C6 Vette.) So there will be some competition for 2010, although the Z is probably going to start at something like 35 large.

I think you mean lbs per HP. HP per lb would give you a decimal.

Otherwise, a very good look at the competition.

Oops! Fixed it.

Also, I added $ per HP to each.
