Angry gm can't fix my car...

2013 rs vert under warranty. i've had a problem with my infotainment system since since i bought the car new 15 months ago. when playing back from a usb the nav screen won't stay on. i've been to the dealer 6 times and the last time was assigned a service request number by gm. gm gave the dealer their suggested method for solving the problem which didn't work. my case has now been assigned to a gm tech person who, as yet, i've not heard from. i'm trying to discover if anyone else has had a problem that's gone on this long, and if so, what to expect from the gm tech mechanic. my patience is wearing thin, since i'm now considering selling this car and can't do it while it's still not working correctly.

So you are playing music from a USB device, plus trying to use the NAV at the same time, correct? What exactly does it do that is the problem? Does it blank out? Display the USB song information?

I had this issue. When using nav and usb together it would leave nav screen and show the usb screen. They did some updates and every once in awhile it will jump between but alot less often.

Gut the system and replace it with an aftermarket. Fortunately one of the top 25 installers in the nation is in Raleigh, go visit Shaun Reilly with 919 Motoring (nearly 20yrs exp).

Though, with you selling the car probably not worth the time or effort, especially since nearly no one is going to test drive a USB drive while navigating on a test drive. For that matter, give it back to the dealer who can't repair it at private party value since 'nothing is wrong'.

It switches from NAV, back to the USB song information screen. I've had it do this as well, but simply pressing the NAV button again would switch it back and it would then stay on NAV.

Sure you could sell it. The issue isn't unique, and the next buyer may never see the issue. I wouldn't even mention it.

thanks for the replies, folks. when playing a usb and with nav screen selected with the "nav" button on the screen bezel, the screen will randomly revert back to the usb screen. exactly as if i had pushed the "back" button on the bezel. if i again push "nav" the screen will show nav again for a minute or two. dealer has so far replaced the entire audio system, usb dongle in the console, done all updates and replaced the communication cables between the audio system and the usb dongle. i know i'm particular, but since i paid for a new car, i want the car to work as advertised in the owner's manual. i'm starting to think that gm is selling a product they don't understand.

As Ive said in other threads about GM infotainment systems, they flat out suck. This is one place that chrysler I'd far superior to both Ford and GM. My does all kinds of funky things. Lucky, I have a good sounding exhaust and I know where I'm going. I rarely turn the system on in my car because I hate how it functions so badly.

I don't know that I'd want a Chrysler UConnect right now, given that there's a massive security vulnerability that allows an attacker to remotely control your throttle/brakes/transmission/basically anything in your car from anywhere on Sprint's network... Crap design right there, the ECU should be read-only from the infotainment system, or preferably not even connected.

That's possible for any car with a connection to a cell network, a la OnStar. I forget what Fords version is but they have it too. So does BMW/Mercedes/everyone with a nice vehicle. They just used a Cherokee for this test.

Also, I think the guys who hacked the car should be punished for the shit they did on a public highway. They told the author of the article that they would not do anything that would be dangerous and then proceeded to kill the engine on a highway where there was no shoulder. They also killed the brakes which lead the author to drive into a ditch. ****ing hell guys, find an abandoned airfield.

Yup. I'm a software guy and security isn't foreign to me at all. The difference right now is that there's a working proof of concept exploit for UConnect. Nobody's tackled OnStar/etc... yet! It's just a matter of time before they get owned as well.

Really, these systems should be airgapped. The entertainment system has no business being able to control the ECU whatsoever, and sometimes convenience features aren't worth the security risk. Read-only access implemented by a memory bank that's write-only on the ECU side and read-only on the entertainment side would be ideal to allow the entertainment system to display info about the state of the car, but you'd sacrifice some functionality such as remote start for sure if the systems were designed this way.

Serious? This is what you have to worry about? So take the USB out when you need navigation. Better yet, put your usb in and use your freaking phone to navigate where you're going. Stop the childish behavior.

You're going to sell the car because of this? So go ahead and sell it. No one would ever notice the problem you found anyway.

Just realized this is your 4th thread of 5 total posts on the same topic. Curious what GM Corporate discussed with you and their resolution offering.

Yes, that would suck. Makes you wonder about all the makes. Cars systems should no way shape or form be linked to the Internet.
