Widened wheel without spacer?
Can I widen my rear wheels to 11'' and not have to use a spacer? I know the widened wheel kits run a spacer but I can't figure out why. It seems that I should be able to go at least a little wider without rubbing. Can someone set me straight on this?

Well let me add another piece to the puzzle. If you widen the 20X9 rears instead of the fronts, would you need a spacer with a 305 tire?

So they add to the inside and use a spacer to push it out a tad to even it out. Easier and cheaper. Example. On the widened wheel in this pic. you see the extra was added to the inside and that's a lot of extra wheel. Last edited by PQ; 03-24-2010 at 11:45 PM. |

So there is very little space between the stock rear wheel and the inner fender. I was under the impression there was more space than that. I like the look with the spacers I just wouldn't trust my car anymore with them on it.

Of course it depends on how wide your talking. Yo can actually squeeze one or two sizes of tire on your stock rims. Here is a guy who put 305s on his STOCK rims. I wouldn't do that. But I play it safe when I can. Can't get him to respond to how they held up. I suspect there were problems. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...t=39012&page=2 No, there's room. Just not enough to extend 2 full inches. Especially on the front. And you're talking about some really wide tires. Last edited by PQ; 03-25-2010 at 09:46 AM. |

I'm just guessing there's a pretty decent amount of added weight. You got added weight of the wider wheel plus a heavier tire. The added weight is basically the only thing keeping me from running wider tires.
In addition putting the wider wheels and tires up front (275s) will also have a negative effect on performance (drag racing). |
