Newbie Questions.
How do I determine what type of engine I have.
I just bought a Camaro SS and do not know much about the car. It is a 1999 Camaro SS SLP package. Before I modify it I want to know everything about it so I don't f it up. I bought it to destroy my friends Vortec Supercharged mustang GT. I am tired of have the slow car at school and want to show everyone whats what. |

a 99 ss has a ls1 in it for an engine. depending on your budget there are many things that could be done to it that would greatly increase its power.

What year is your friends GT? What is he putting down at the track for times?
You have a 13.3 @ 105mph car. With a few bolt ons and some practice you'll have a sub 13 second car.

I have a 2002 WS6 with the same engine as your car, the almighty LS1! Here is what you should do for starters, I will give you my results which will probably give you similar gains:
My car stock was around - 310rwhp(rear wheel horse power) My car with just a Borla catback exhaust - 320rwhp Added SLP air lid, Pacesetter longtube headers, TSP catted y-pipe, and a 3 inch exhaust cutout - 343rwhp I went and got the car dyno tuned for $300 to maximize hp throughout the power band and get my air/fuel ratio set up - 360rwhp and 370rwtq Ryan, the guy who did my dyno tuning said I had a torque monster, most people with these mods do not see near 370rwtq. The hp is probably close to what you will get with those mods. Since you have a 1999 you should upgrade your intake to a LS6 intake which is good for 10-15 hp, this intake came on the 2001 and 2002 LS1's but not 98-00 year models. After that you can add a bigger cam which will put you in the 400rwhp range. Depending on what year Mustang you may be able to beat it before your cam install, after the cam install you shouldn't have a problem beating him. Hope this helps. |

Is it just me or are you guys forgetting that he has the SLP package? That makes a bit more power than your stock LS1.

if you remove or gut your cat, get headers, and a cam, and you should spant that rustang. If you really want to show him up, get a NOS kit for 400 bucks, dont tell him, and you'll embarres him. you have to remember too, the stang is heavier than your car, the weight distribution is not as good as yours, so even if he has you by 100 HP to 60 MPH or so you should take him no problem, espically to an inexperienced driver.

Congrats on getting an SS.
Regardless what Tag will tell you, '99 SS's are the best! I own one as well. Your SS has an LS1. As for the "SLP pkg.", from what I remember, the only performance upgrade was the 'Performance Exhaust' which increased HP from 320 to 327. You can see my sig. for some of the mods I've performed, and when dynoed by SLP, my HP was 370. |
